UK Scene #97

14 November 2003

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Welcome one and all to another jam packed one thousand words or so, on everyone's favourite topic the UK Scene. This week there are lots of issues to talk about including the rough time the UK Scene is having on the injury front as it seems with every day that goes by another name adds themselves to the list. Also we have a lot of international information regarding the UK Scene as well as all the gossip to throw in so sit back relax and open a can coke.

I start though this week with yes you guessed it the news of a formation of a new wrestling promotion. This seems to be a weekly occurrence now but the latest three letter abbreviation we have to remember is TNT. I am yet to find out if these three letters are suppose to stand for something wrestling related, so please answers on a postcode if you know or can come up with a funny answer. Like I say details are very sketchy at the moment but that is always to be expected with a new promotion.

They are getting right down to business though by announcing their first show which will take place from the Connaught Leisure Centre in Aldershot. The show features a good mix of stars from former TWA stars Phil Lea and The Flatliner to FWA stars Paul Travell and Andy Simmonz with many more besides. I am not sure of the date for the event but at tickets priced at £8 and £10 respectively it could be well worth the watch. If this isn't enough to get you ringing up for tickets the news I am about to tell you might and that is that the show will feature The Insane Mongo from Mexico City all I can say is wow.

Now time for the news on the sick inflicted workers in the UK at this moment in time. First we start with Paul Travell who was injured in the ring at British Uprising 2. As many of you know his back was set a light by Mikey Whipwreck in an unplanned attack during their flaming tables match. News has just been released that Paul suffered third degree burns over 4 - 5% of his body and there is a very gruesome picture of this over at http://www.frontierwrestling.com. Paul was advised to stay clear of wrestling for 8 - 12 weeks but it is unsure how long Paul will take off. On the same show Ulf suffered a fractured elbow during the Showstealer heel turn which could cause him to be out for 6 months. Ulf did want to wrestle through the injury but the FWA said he will not be able to work for them until the injury is healed.

To add to all of this FWA's breakout star Jack Xavier suffered a broken nose against Homicide so it was a very unfortunate night for the FWA but this is the unpredictability of the business we are in. So all of these guys have joined Flash Barker on the injury list though he stands to be out for the longest as it could take up to 8 months for his knees to heal. Ulf has worked hard through his injury that he has had for some time whilst still getting rave reviews for his performances but the wear and tear have taken their toll and he has finally had to cave in and have the surgery done to help prolong his career and well being.

Doug Williams has once again added to his air-miles as he has headed for Japan to work for NOAH's latest tour called "Navigation Fighting Spirit." Doug is now becoming a NOAH veteran after many tours spent with them to the point now that he is getting a lot more singles matches than he use to as in previous tours he has predominantly worked tag matches. The tour will take Doug all over Japan facing the likes of Yoshinara Ogawa and Masao Inoue just to name a few. Everyone here at 101 would like to send their good luck wishes to Doug and hopes he has another impressive tour of Japan.

NWA Ireland are continuing to progress in Ireland by announcing more live shows. This newly formed promotion seems to be going from strength to strength and is growing by the minute. They have shows lined up for the 29th in Kildare and on the 30th of November in Co. Meath. The shows will feature stars from NWA Ireland and NWA-UK so should be well worth going to see the mix of new and established talent. Although rising NWA Ireland star Justin Bred wont be on the cards after recently suffering a serious neck injury in training we hope to see him back in the ring when he has fully recovered.

Keeping on the Hammerlock theme remember the 10th anniversary tour is still going on through to the 22nd of November I believe. The tour has gone well so far and has been quite successful. The shows feature Canadian wrestler "Son of Abdullah" he has formed a very successful partnership with NWA-UK star Danny Williams. The tour moves on to Maidstone on the 21st.

On the 22nd of November the link between RBW and UKWA will be strengthened even further as they embark on a joint show which will take place at the Killamarsh Sports Centre. This will be the first of many as further joint shows are planned for the 7th of December which will be in Sheffield and at the Vale Social Club in Nottingham on the 27th of December. These three shows will see all the major titles from both promotions be defended as well as a new structure for tag team championships to be defended. The champions can consist of three wrestlers although only two can defend the belts in any given match if a wrestler is injured before the match or unable to compete the team can substitute in their third member.

Remember there are many shows currently going on around the UK at the moment including the Elite Wrestling Federation in Stroud on the 27th of November and UKPW in the New Forrest on the 12 of December. For more events make sure to check the calendar and if you want to increase your UK Scene knowledge or chat to other UK fans be sure to stop over at the UK Scene forum.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
