UK Scene #98

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

As the time moves ever closer to the milestone of 100 UK Scene columns on the site I present to you another weekly round up of enough UK Scene news to fill your boots with. This week we have seen more TV exposure for UK stars, lots of news regarding upcoming events for 2004 as well as the obligatory X-Wrestling update.

This week I start off by talking about the latest bit of television exposure no matter how peculiar it is. This week stars of the FWA Alex Shane, Nikita and Burchill took a trip down to the Salon. Now yes you may be saying that's nothing out of the ordinary and why should I be reporting on Alex Shane going to a salon hey many of us up and down the country do this on a regular basis. This was special though as they were all booked to the Salon which is the basis for Channel 4 and E4 programme "The Salon."

The programme is run like Big Brother just this time in the workplace and pulls in millions of viewers a night to its 6pm round up show. The programme is also screened live in real time throughout the day on E4 for those who can receive the channel. Anybody from the public can apply to go in and be a customer but it is only the lucky few that get selected and then get to get on TV. With this in mind the FWA sent their team down there to see how things were run.

The threesome were booked in for 2pm last Tuesday but by the time I switched on E4 they were screening episodes of Dawson's Creek when the epg said it should be the Salon Live as I believe they were experiencing problems with the show- a powercut!. To add to this I had to work at 6pm and didn't get to see the highlights show from the day either. I am lead to believe though that poor Alex had his eyebrows either waxed or shaved I forget. The only thing I do know is that the staff at the Salon probably wont be able to forget them.

This is good to see that UK promotions and wrestlers are finding ways to get themselves on to national TV which I encourage until the time comes that wrestling is once again screened on national TV in the UK again. Any publicity is better than no publicity and appearing on such a high profile show as the Salon can only do the FWA good. They seem to be one of the few promotions at the moment going out of their way to think of ideas to get more exposure and get back on TV. Good product placement guys good job.

X-Wrestling have once again kept themselves in the news recently by announcing their first match for the big "Revolution" show in April next year. No further talent has been added to the roster but finally some talent has been paired up and put in the card. A triple threat match has been signed which will be Shark Boy vs. Matt Striker vs. Reckless Youth. This should be a brilliant Indy Jnr Heavyweight feel match which will be good to see in the UK.

X-Wrestling have established an impressive roster of stars which must have cost them a penny or two. I am not saying if they have spent too little or not enough money as I don't personally have access to their business dealings but they certainly have got a lot of stars. Something unique about it though is they seem to have a good blend of styles, nationalities and characters in there from the Indy guys to the veterans to the Europeans it should culminate in to a brilliant show in April lets just hope it's a smooth ride running up to the event.

We may still have over a month left of the year but already promotions are starting to fill out their calendars for 2004 which can only be a good thing so us wrestling fans can plan in advance how to get to events, get time off work etc. It looks like the FWA will be keeping the main arenas they played to last year those being York Hall and the Civic Hall in Broxbourne with both venues scheduled to hold a few events next year. Also Revolution British Wrestling to show continuing progress have also started announcing dates and events for 2004 which can only be a good sign. Remember to keep your eyes glued to the calendar to find out the what, where and when of wrestling events.

It is now only a week away from the latest DAM charity event at the Holt community centre in Norfolk which is going down next Friday. The card features a lot of your WAW favourites in action including Ricky Knight, UK Pitbulls, Hot Stuff and the Zebra Kid. To help with the fundraising they will be holding a raffle and auctioning off a signed WAW tag team belt which has been signed by the already mentioned stars. All proceeds will go to Theresa Bellingham who has cerebal palsy so a very worthy cause.

Keeping on the theme of WAW they have recently announced their plans for the Christmas period. From Boxing day through to the 1st of January they will be putting on shows at various Pontins holiday camps. So no rest for the stars of WAW over the Christmas period but if you are available on the below dates I would definitely go down and support them:

  • 26th December - Pontins, Hemsby
  • 26th December - Pontins, Blackpool
  • 27th December - Pontins, Camber Sands
  • 30th December - Pontins, Southport
  • 30th December - Pointins, Camber Sands
  • 31st December - Pontins, Prestatyn
  • 1st January - Pontins, Hemsby
  • 1st January - Pontins, Blackpool

So with each show starting at 2pm its going to be a busy time for WAW especially doing split shows on some dates very reminiscent of All Star wrestling but the more events you can put on the better I say. You can find out more information on WAW by logging on to: www.waw-uk.vze.com

So that once again brings you back up to date with all latest happening in the UK Scene and that brings me one step closer to the big 100. Hope you all have a good and safe week and remember to get out there and support the UK Scene.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
