Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Christmas week is now upon us. A normally quiet time for the UK Scene as people recharge the batteries in order to be fresh for the upcoming year and in order to lay plans for the year ahead. This week though it has been busier than usual with lots of interesting news to talk about as well as lots of site updates to keep you informed about.

There is only one place I can start this week and this is with the news that I posted on the newsboard this week which was the temporary retirement of Sweet Saraya. She has told Julian Radbourne in an interview he conducted with her down at the WAW website that injuries and the lack of competition has made her come to this decision. With this retirement she relinquishes the WAW world and British women's titles.

This is not the end of Saraya in British Wrestling as she will still be an active manageress and be doing work backstage and in the office no doubt when called upon. So hopefully over time as injuries heal and new women wrestlers hit the scene she will make a full wrestling return to the ring. It's just a shame that a match between Sweet Saraya and Nikita never got pushed as it could have been a brilliant feud which could of run and run.

Sweet Saraya has carried the torch for women's wrestling for some time now and she is a great role model and ambassador for up and coming female wrestlers. Due to no fault of her own especially over the last couple of years she has had little competition as we have been struggling to call the women's scene a division in its own right due to the lack of British female wrestlers. So Saraya has gone out of her way to be a very active wrestler performing up and down the country night in night out sometimes even fighting the guys. She will be greatly missed and personally I hope she comes back soon although I hope she does what makes her happy.

Following on from exposure the likes of FWA and IWW have got through The Wrestling Channel more British promotions have been able to gain TV deals. New promotion TNT this week have announced that their show on the 24 of January in Aldershot will be commissioned for Sky TV. This is great news and hopefully even more promotions can explore new avenues to get even more exposure. I am yet to know the exact details of in which capacity the footage will be used in and when it will be screened.

Keeping on the TV front X-Wrestling have formally announced that they are currently in talks with TV companies about getting their debut show Revolution screened on the TV. They hope to have deal arranged within 4 - 6 weeks and say they will give full details when a deal has been arranged although they have confirmed that it won't be The Wrestling Channel.

In their latest press release X-Wrestling have also announced that there will be a 10 man battle royal at Revolution with the winner being able to pick whatever match he likes for the next event. Speaking of the next event after Revolution although this may be getting a bit too far ahead of ourselves it looks like the event could happen in Scotland as there has been great demand expressed to X-Wrestling that the fans want to see them up there which can only be good for the Scottish scene.

This time of year normally sees promotions straying away from putting on live events but RBW as they continue to break down barriers will be putting on their latest show on December 27th. To add to this it will be the first time but not the last I am told that they will be putting on the event from The Vale Social Club in Colwick, Nottingham. The card features the like of Johnny Kidd, Alan Kilby and Jorge Costano to name a few.

FCW have just announced a new training seminar following on from the success they had with the last one. The event will take place on the 1st of February at The Thorns School and Community College in Brierley Hill, West Midlands. To coincide with this news they have announced their first event of the new year will be held at The Baggeridge Social Welfare club on the 25th of January. This event will feature Keith Myatt "High Impact" Sam Green, Spud, the FCW debut of Majik and many more. If you would like more information on these events please feel free to enquire through the FCW forum which can be found here.

Keeping on the FCW front we here at Wrestling101 are running a big FCW competition at the moment where you can get your hands on a signed copy of FCW "Storm Warning" and a signed Jonny Storm picture for two lucky winners. For more information click here.

As you will see this week on Wrestling101 our newest columnist and RBW Wrestler / Trainer Scott Future gave us a little taste to what we can expect from his upcoming columns here at the site. I personally look forward to reading his columns as not many know, as well as being one of the rising stars of the UK Scene Scott also is trained and has a degree in Multimedia Journalism. So not only is Scott a brilliant wrestler he is an experienced writer so he can bring the best of both worlds in to his column. You can read Scott's first bit for the site by going here.

Baxter Burridge has been in contact with me this week and his first column is nearing completion I have had the pleasure of reading exerts and the stuff I have read is very entertaining to say the least. I am also currently reviewing some more potential columnists for the site as we speak so there could be more additions to the fold to come so watch this space.

Before I go this week must remind you all to register your votes in the 2003 UK Scene awards (Polls posted on the UK Scene Forum). The awards are already unintentionally causing controversy which must mean they are prestigious so why not join in the fun and register your vote. The 4 categories are: Best Promotion, Best Event, Most Improved Wrestler and Best Wrestler of 2003. To vote click here.

I will leave by wishing all the readers and staff at the website a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
