UK Scene #103

3 January 2004

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

It's a new year and yes you guessed it the column is back as good as ever after a very small absence to take in the festivities of the Christmas period. So what am I going to talk about this week I hear you cry? Well we have the formal announcements of the Wrestling101 / Talk Wrestling Online 2003 UK Scene awards, all the news on yet more new promotions causing a stir, the current state of the WAW title scene and much more besides so put back the tasks like adding another hole to your belt and enjoy reading this weeks UK Scene.

So where else can I start but with the results of the prestigious Wrestling101 / Talk Wrestling Online 2003 UK Scene awards. I would like to first off thank all the people who voted in the awards and took time to type comments about their choices. So now on with the official announcement of the winners drum roll please:

Most improved wrestler of the Year 2003: James Tighe

Goldy's comment:
"I will say James Tighe, purely because you can actually see the huge improvements he's made, his match with Doug at Uprising 2 was awesome as was his performance against Paul London. At the start of this year no one would of thought that Tighe would of been so close to winning the FWAs Heavyweight Title."

Best Event of the year 2003: FWA British Uprising II

Goldy's comment:
"I've only seen the two FWA shows out of this list and think that Frontiers of Honour was the better show."

Best UK Promotion of the Year 2003: FWA

Goldy's comment:
"I'm voting FWA just for the sheer talent involved. Close call though."

Best Wrestler of the Year 2003: Doug Williams

Goldy's comment:
"aww this is sooooo tough! I want to be bias and say Jonny Storm, he's had a grand year and put on some awesome matches and not just for FWA either. But he's up against Doug Williams who has also had a fab year, stepping out from the FWA etc and working in Japan and America to name a few regularly. Although he was missing from some shows I saw. Then there's James Mason who is such a hard worker, performing nightly and every time really excelling himself. Jodie to who was really coming into his own before he had to retire. His match with Daniels was brilliant and Jodie proved in that match that he was right up there in the list of accomplished Indy workers. Jeez Ad you make it very hard to choose. Anyways I've decided on Williams as he really has been solid all year."

So big congratulations from myself and the Wrestling101 / Talk Wrestling Online crew to all the winners you are all very deserving. Now on to the news you all came to read:

You may remember in the last column before Christmas I wrote about the temporary retirement of WAW World and British ladies champ Sweet Saraya well since then WAW have released a statement regarding the future of these titles. WAW have announced that the title are now vacant and are asking any female wrestler that thinks she has what it takes to be the a WAW women's champ to get in contact with them through their website: http://www.waw-uk.vze.com.

Like I said in the intro we have another next big thing promotion on our hands called NCW (National Championship Wrestling). Their mission is to bring UK Wrestling in line with its American counterparts by innovating and building upon the rules and standards you would find in the UK's current pro wrestling scene. They plan to start by running monthly shows in the South East of England but by 2005 have viable strength in Europe. To visit their site and find out more about their plans go to: http://www.ncwuk.com/

Now we are quite lucky here at Wrestling101 as the first superstar announced to be working for the promotion is none other than our new columnist Scott Future. So hopefully as the weeks progress Scott will be able to let us know more of his involvement with NCW, their plans and his thoughts on the promotion. You never know you might get some NCW exclusives by reading Scott's columns.

Whilst we are speaking of Scott to help introduce himself he has done a new interview for the site which is a brilliant read and can be read by going here.

This weekend sees more Brits on international soil again as Andy Simmonz and Paul Birchill of the FWA are competing in Italy for ICW. The event they are featuring in is called Cold War and they will be competing in a 4 man tournament which also includes Diablo Rojo and Tsunami and is for the Italian Championship belt. Good luck to both guys and I will hopefully be able to report back next week on their progress.

RBW are really starting to grow and expand in London at the moment which is a big market for any promotion due to the population density in the city so it can only be a wise business move. RBW are known for their stronghold in Nottingham but are now looking in to making Enfield another stronghold. First off they announced the extension of training hours at their training Centre in Enfield on Sundays the new hours are 11am - 2pm and 2pm - 3pm for advanced training.

Following hot of the heels of this announcement RBW announced that January 24th will see them put on their first show in the London / Middlesex area. The show will take place at the Celbic hall which is right next door to the RBW training facility. Doors open at 7pm and tickets cost £7 for more information log on to Revolutionbritishwrestling.co.uk

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
