UK Scene #107

31 January 2004

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Welcome one and all once again to another slice of the UK Scene action. In what has been a quieter week for news than what we have experienced so far in January but this means more time to reflect on what has happened recently and gear ourselves up for the weeks and months to come. This week I will talk about the future for FWA and speculate on what 2004 has in store. As well as this I will be talking about FCW’s big event last weekend and continue my regular feature Brits abroad.

Ok let’s start with the FWA and the anticipation of their return to regular action. Back on December 1st the FWA announced they would be taking an 8 week recess period so that the behind the scenes team could get up straight and work on deals and negotiations for 2004. This week sees the end of the 8 week period as we move in to February which means an announcement could happen any day which is hugely anticipated by many wrestling fans.

The FWA had its busiest year in 2003 by putting on big monthly event as well as doing its first ever tours. Although it was a successful year for FWA on the other side it was a very tiring and stressful one for the powers that be which I think is why the recess was called for as there is only so much your mind and body can take when you are always trying to top the show before it.

So with this in mind what does 2004 have in store for the FWA? This is the million pound question as there are so many ways they can take the company. I think we will see a more balanced schedule with regular events at regular venues with these building up as the year goes on. The tours were a brilliant idea and were good to do just to prove they could do it but the stresses and problems encountered I think will lead the FWA to go down the route of doing more shows just not being on the road doing show night after night as there were some very popular areas that the FWA went to on the tours so I could see these becoming homes of regular shows.

Because of the TV deal with The Wrestling Channel I think this will lead to more people wanting to join the FWA and more and more stars being created to meet the increased workload of shows. Due to the TV deal and behind the scenes negotiations I think that the FWA event videos will be produced quicker and to a very high quality to keep up with the TV shows. So unless the FWA loses any of its main guys I can only see it being a huge year for FWA but until the announcement is made we won’t know for sure.

To read Mark Sloan’s mini statement which was used to clear up issues which had arisen due to the recess go here.

FCW’s rise up the notoriety ladder got a few rungs higher on Sunday as they put on another great show from the Baggeridge Social Welfare centre. The event featured the likes of Kevin O’neil, Celt Kennedy, Keith Myatt and Sam Green just to name a few. This was very a much a FCW card with FCW regulars really stealing the show with Jack Storm’s match against The Judge as many peoples favourite match from the event.

This was a very important event for FCW to come through without the likes of Spud and a big name brought in from the outside it was a real test of the FCW main roster and they passed with flying colours and proved they don’t need to import big name talent to put on a brilliant show and send the fans home happy. The next FCW event is entitled “Friday the 13th part 2” which surprisingly enough takes place on Friday February 13th at the brilliant wrestling venue which has hosted many wrestling events in its time the Collingwood centre in Great Barr. I am lead to believe Andy “The pigman” hogg will be making his FCW return in this event.

Now its time for yes you guessed Brits abroad. As you know earlier this month Jonny Storm headed off for a tour of the states well you will be glad to know that leg of the tour has been completed very successfully and Jonny is now in Japan for a weekend of action for Zero-One. Tonight (30/1) he is Osaka working with Tom Howard squaring off against Steve Corino and Takao Omori then tomorrow night (31/1) he will be in Tokyo to work against the Christopher Street connection with Josh Daniels. Well done to Jonny hope the last leg of the tour goes off without a hitch and that you are soon back in the UK entertaining your faithful fans.

To add to this great news as it was announced on the UK newsboard this week RBW wrestlers Jack Hazard and Cameron Knite are on there way to the USA in March. This won’t be the first time for either of them though as they have both performed successfully in the USA before and will no doubt do our country proud again.

Following on from all the X-Wrestling announcements this week NCW have picked their moment to announce the details of their first big event. NCW is another promotion that claim they will be leading the way in the UK Scene in 2004. The debut event is set to take place on March 13th at The Reading Rivermead Centre. The all UK cast of wrestlers announced so far include Scott Future, The Dominator, The UK Pitbulls, The Flatliner, Robbie Brookside and 5 Star Flash just to name a few. So for more information on this promotion and on the upcoming event visit: http://www.ncwuk.com

Continuing on the theme of new promotions a promotion called RPW (Rebel Pro Wrestling) have announced an event for February the 1st in Biggleswade called “Best of British.” The event will feature Kid Romeo, Stixx, MTX, Blondie Barratt and more. I am unsure at this time if they are anything to do with Rebel Productions.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
