UK Scene #111

Welcome one and all once again to another weekly dose of UK Scene action. After last weeks one off special it’s back down to normal business and that’s reporting the stories making the news this week. The main stories I will be talking about this week are NCW’s road to their first event, major changes to the ICW card and once again we will do our Brits Abroad update.

We are now finally two weeks away from the debut of NCW. The promotion was formed in 2003 and the hype has been building towards their debut event which takes place on March 13th from the Reading Rivermead Centre. When they formed they claimed to be the next big thing and to become the UK Scene leader so it’s now only two weeks until they get the chance to try and prove themselves.

This week more big names have been added to the card just to wet the appetite of people who already have tickets and hopefully to persuade those still unsure whether to go or not to get tickets. With Shane Douglas and a host of UK stars already announced this week they added “The underwear model” Eric Priest (NWA:TNA, AWA) and UK stars Jonny Storm and Drew McDonald.

I think they have got a good balance on the card now between UK and US stars it’s just a matter of waiting to see if they can deliver on the night. With the additions of Jonny and Drew the UK side of the card is looking really impressive which reads like a who’s who of the UK Scene with a mix of upcoming stars and old school legends. It is already looking like Drew will feud with the Flatliner in Reading.

The run up to ICW’s Hostile Intent hasn’t run as smoothly as NCW but a lot of hard work has been put in by both promotions to make sure fans get good value for money. Unfortunately Steve Corino and Low-Ki have had to pull out of the event at the DL Centre in Darwen. The boys of ICW have scrambled well and arranged a brilliant Indy feel match for the main event which will be B-Boy vs. Chris Hero.

Before ICW can get to Hostile Intent they have three events as part of their 2003/2004 International Impact tour which will keep them busy and hopefully prepare them for the big event which will take place on the 24th of April.

Now do you remember last year with all the rumours circulating about British wrestling being screened on BBC Three. Well at the time all the rumours were about Hammerlock but now the rumours are over as BBC Three is screening British Wrestling but not as we all once thought. On Johnny Vaughan’s latest entertainment show “Live at Johnny’s” which airs On Friday nights at 8pm there will be up to date action screened from Premier Promotions shows. The section of the show will feature clips from the best matches with commentary supplied by British Wrestling World of Sport commentator the one and only Dickie Davies.

This news although being excellent has brought back to life interest in the comments made by NWA-UK sometime ago that they had secured a television deal. It has been so long ago that most had forgotten about it but at the time there were rumours galore about it. With this news though it makes you think what has happened to the deal and if it is still going on what channel is it with? They are running out of avenues fast.

Getting a TV deal is big news, its what everyone in the UK Scene wants to see. I think the best policy with news like this is not to announce it until your programme is in the TV schedule like what Premier Promotions have done. The good news is though that this also gets the fans ready for the launch of The Wrestling Channel the day after Wrestlemania!

News is emerging that the Highlander Colin McKay has lost a BCW retirement match to Justin Richards. Colin McKay is the driving force behind the company so this could see him take a step down from his in ring work to focus on all the other jobs associated with his training and BCW but the way in which it went down makes you think we haven’t seen the last of Colin Yet.

During his match with Justin Richards there was an unexpected interruption by another Highlander that Being Drew McDonald who cost Colin the match. Drew went on to say there is only one true Highlander and that he wanted to make sure all the fake Highlanders were run out of the ring. I have got a feeling this isn’t the last we have heard on this situation so be sure to get down to the next BCW event to see what takes place.

Now finally this leads us on to our almost weekly feature that being of course Brits Abroad. This week it’s the run of representatives of Dropkixx and CWC. Ashe, Joe Riot, Leroy Kincaid, Scott Frazer, Liz Pedder and Vicky Swain will be flying the flag for Britain as they head don to Atlanta this weekend for a second visit to a former WCW star that being Dave Taylor. Whilst over there for a week’s intensive training they will also be attending Raw tapings and catching up with the guys like they did at the Insurrextion PPV last year. There is also a chance they may be getting a visit to the facility run by Dave “Fit” Finlay.

I hope all of this has satisfied your thirst this week for UK Scene knowledge. If by some small chance it hasn’t be sure to keep a daily check on the newsboard at Wrestling101 where you can get all the up to date news stories from around the Wrestling world as they happen.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
