UK Scene #114

Welcome one and all once again to another round up of the latest goings on in the crazy world which is the UK Scene. This week there is lots to get through despite it being less than a week since my last column. This week I will be talking about The Wrestling Channel’s first week of broadcasting, the new training facilities in Scotland, FWA’s big return and much more so sit back and relax as I bring you this week’s UK Scene.

Hot off the heels of Wrestlemania and after extensive advertising during WWE shows on Sky The Wrestling Channel aired on Monday. It has been nearly a year of waiting but was it was worth it as we were greeted by action from all over the world. I am currently having signal problems which I will be talking to the people who installed my Sky system, so haven’t been able to see much but what I have seen has looked superb.

So far we have seen action from the FWA and the World of Sport days representing the UK Scene. FWA’s first programme featured matches from Seasons Beatings 2002. It was good to see some of the back catalogue matches which this time included Jonny Storm vs. Doug Williams and Jody Fleisch vs. AJ Styles from the round robin tournament. In the fast moving wrestling world it easy to forget about matches so it was good to watch again what we have been raving about in the past and that may have been forgotten.

Now on to the news regarding the new wrestling training facility in Scotland. After years of promoting events SCW have finally announced the opening of their very own training facility which will be called “Area 52” and opened on April 1st. Training at the centre in Linwood will be lead by Conscience and the centre will be run in association with NWA-UK which will see a lot of their wrestlers heading up North to do guest sessions. To find out more about this, see: ScottishCW.com

The wrestling scene is certainly developing well in Scotland at the moment as this announcement now means there are now two training facilities in Scotland the other being in Rutherglen. That is more than you get in the whole of the south west of England so they must be doing something right and I do encourage anybody in Scotland to go and use these facilities and ensure there future for years to come. Just to think five years there was no wrestling scene in Scotland but now thanks to SCW and BCW it’s thriving.

After months of waiting we are now only a week away to the big return of the FWA for their first show of 2004. The FWA will be coming back with a bang as they promote their first big extravaganza of the year “New Frontiers 2” from Brent Town Hall in London. This event will lead us in to a busy year for 2004 building on the development of 2003. Last year the FWA tested some venues for the very first time but this year it will see them promoting monthly shows from some of these venues instead of the occasional tour.

On top of all of this FWA will be starting a new type of show called FWA “Unsigned” this will feature talent from around the UK who want to make it on to the full FWA roster so there will be lots of FWA events happening up and down the country this year. All of these shows from now on will be taped with broadcasting on The Wrestling Channel in mind. So it looks like its going to be a very busy year for the FWA as they promote more shows and in more venues starting this Friday with their first show at Brent Town Hall. For more information on this event go to: FrontierWrestling.com

Last weekend saw the debut of new promotion UFO (Ultimate Fighting Organisation) who promoted two shows from the Corn Exchange in Leeds. The shows featured the likes of Hade Vansen, Stixx, Johnny Kidd, Iceman and Lee Butler to name just a few with Hade Vansen being crowned as the first UFO champion. The shows were unfortunately not as well attended as hoped but this was due to the publicity being late which included slots on ITV’s Calendar programme and BBC Radio Leeds.

The UFO and the Corn Exchange are both showing desire to promote another UFO show from the Corn Exchange so there is a strong likelihood that this is not the last we have heard from them. If they put on more quality shows with the line-ups they had last weekend and if word gets around I’m sure they could have a bright future.

Now not strictly UK news but I have to mention it none the less. Last week I spoke on NCW’s debut event from Reading well since that event there has been some big news for one of the performers on the show. The “Underwear model” Eric Priest who they brought in for the show from the US has been signed up by the WWE and is set to debut on the big draft show of WWE Raw this week. This is brilliant news for Eric and we wish him all the best with his time in the WWE. NCW are still hoping to bring him back to the UK for another NCW show in August. You can also read more about this show in Scott Futures latest Future-Shock column.

Wrestling Directory has been redesigned - so all you wrestlers and promotions go add your websites now.

This week I will finish with another edition of Brits abroad. Recently it has been the turn of the Dominator, Poision, Doug Williams and the UK Pitbulls to invade FCW in Holland. In the event Doug Williams beat CZW star Z-Barr but unfortunately the team of the Dominator & The UK Pitbulls were beaten by Bas & Mott Van Kunder and Bull. A big well done to all the guys for flying the flag in such a big a contingent over in Holland and although the Dominator lost he kept the FCW championship as he wasn’t pinned.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
