Welcome one and all to another trek in to the deepest depths of British Wrestling. It has been yet another busy week in the UK Scene to talk about. Only days after talking about the demise of X-Wrestling in my last column they have decided to call it a day but I can’t really credit myself with that one as anyone could have seen that coming. This week’s edition will heavily feature news on Brits abroad, some opinions on shows which have gone down this week and yes more TV news so it sounds like things are back to normal and all is well in the UK Scene but is it?

First off I will just continue on from the bit on X-Wrestling in last week’s column. I would just like to state it wasn’t my desire for X-Wrestling to close down more to spur the opposite and get them motivated to prove the doubters wrong ok the nails were probably in the coffin well before my column but I for one didn’t want you guys to close down. With more promotions springing up like SWF and GWE over the last few weeks promising to be the next big thing I unfortunately doubt this will be the last time I will talking about hype in the UK Wrestling scene.

Speaking of big events I must give a big round of applause to Lee Butler this week after the “Hostile Takeover” show he ran in Darwen last week. Over the last few years Lee has been working quietly building up the Garage-Pro-Wrestling gym and his GPW wrestling promotion. These events haven’t been about hype just about wrestling, good local promotion and hard work to the point he now has regular venues and strong crowds that come to the events.

Around four weeks ago Lee after becoming a dab hand at promoting decided to takeover the reigns of this hyped so called super-show from Kevin Iddon of ICW. After arranging and booking the event he felt due to personal reasons he couldn’t continue the running of the show. So not to disappoint the fans Lee stepped in to the breach and took on the very hard task of promoting an event in less than 4 weeks in a venue he had never run before.

The fans on the whole were sent home happy from the event as Lee managed to re-book a brilliant show because B-Boy couldn’t be there Butler at last minute brought in Alex Shane, Drew McDonald and Skull Murphy just to name a few to bring together a brilliant card top to bottom. The crowd was a little disappointing but full credit to Lee for trying his hardest with an almost impossible job it reminded me of when Scott Conway took over the running of Wrestlexpress and even he couldn’t draw the crowd he wanted so much respect to Lee for his efforts.

Over one hundred fans were on hand on Sunday to witness the crowning of the first ever FCW champion at “The road to the gold – The final battle” at the Baggeridge Social Welfare Centre. This was one of the biggest FCW cards to date and a historic night for this growing promotion. After an impressive under card which featured British stars including Jonny Storm, Jorge Costano and the boy with a big future that is of course Spud. On top of this they had acquired the services of foreign star X-Dream for the night who I think is now the first foreign star to come and work a FCW event.

The match everyone had been waiting for though was the FCW heavyweight title tournament final between Celt Kennedy and Laken Xander. After months of build up and tournament matches spanning the last few events the time for waiting was over. A title was the one thing FCW had been lacking as they churn out more regular events and tonight finally one was to be crowned. The deserving recipient of the belt was Celt Kennedy who beat Laken Xander in the tournament final. FCW now have a class act and a true journey man of the game as their champion and I am sure with him as a champion the promotion will only go on to bigger and better things.

Now I am going to revert back to what I started the column talking about and that is of course super-shows. For once though I am not talking about British super-shows yes this craze has now hit the continent.

An organisation called 2FC who specialise in distributing Combat Zone Wrestling and Ring of Honor videos to French Speaking countries have thrown their hat in to the ring announcing a big wrestling event on the 6th of June in Toulouse France. The show will feature the likes of X-Dream and Swiss Money Holdings but they will be joined by UK talent which includes Jonny Storm and the Zebra Kid. To add to all of this WWE’s French commentator will also be on hand for this history making event.

To add to this a promotion called World Wrestling Superstars are holding a big event in Holland with many top American names but no UK stars have been announced to date. I will keep you posted of any news if they do add any UK talent to the show “European Takeover” in Urecht.

To cap off Brits abroad this week must say good luck to Doug Williams who has signed up for three events this summer with Ring of Honor the shows take place on the 17th, 23rd and 24th of July. There is a possibility of more shows during his time out there as well so it looks like Doug has a busy summer ahead of him as he is also working for NECW at the end of August.

To finish this week I must say a big congrats to BCW who have Thistle TV following them at the moment to film a documentary about the organisation. It is also hoped that they will film events to be shown on their station in the near future.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
