UK Scene #126

Welcome one and all to my penultimate UK Scene column before my summer hiatus. This week will be my last strictly news related column until September so I have a jam packed edition in store for you this week. This week I will talk about yet another sad retirement from wrestling, the upcoming FWA event Carpe Diem event and the guys leaving our shores to work for Conway in Thailand. So sit back, relax and most importantly enjoy reading.

So it is with the sad news I start this week as the UK Scene lost another brilliant wrestler this week. Now in my columns I have been a big fan of this man and have a lot of respect for him and he is none other than Adam ĎCeltí Kennedy. In a time where the young high flying wrestlers seem to grab all the attention Adam wasnít hyped and talked about net fans but boy he could wrestle. I got the privilege of seeing him work at GBH and Brawl and on both cards he stood out.

Celt had the look and the skill which is a combination very lacking in the UK Scene. OK he didnít scale the so called heights of the UK Scene but for every promotion he worked for, he gave 100% and for the ones he stuck with became a dominating force within the promotion. For British wrestling fans Celtís name added that extra bit of interest to a card and would be one of the reasons you went to the show.

At just one year older than myself he has had to call a day on a wrestling career which in reality only spanned five years of active wrestling but seems like so much more. Celt had the look and ability to be a brilliant monster character for any promotion in the UK and even further a field but unfortunately we will never be able to see that happen. Celt will be a big loss to FCW and the UK Scene as a whole and we here at Wrestling 101 wish him all the best for his life away from wrestling we hope it is an enjoyable and successful one.

We are once again in the run up to another huge card of FWA action this week from Brent Town Hall that of course being Carpe Diem. The road to Carpe Diem starts on the 17th as we see FWA live hitting the Winter Gardens in Cleethorpes before steamrolling in to Brent Town Hall on the 18th. The action may be waiting to start but the war of words and anticipation is already in full flow.

The card currently looks like this:

  • James Tighe v Low-Ki
  • Steve Gray v Mal Sanders
  • Aviv Mayaan v Mark Sloan
  • Burchill v a Member of Hampton Court
  • Alex Shane & Hade Vansen v Jack Xavier & Steve Corino
  • Zebra Kid v Doug Williams

On top of these great encounters Nikita will face the person who placed the £10,000 bounty on her head and the FWA will honour Flash Barker with a retirement ceremony. So what a stacked card you have to look forward to, that it is one of the most impressive line-ups I have seen for some time and hopefully the FWA will be able to pull another brilliant event out of the hat. The event needs to be a good one, after not having a major event since Crunch in April the FWA faithful maybe getting a bit restless. After the long hiatus everyone hoped that there would be constant big events so letís just hope having no major event in May was just a rarity.

The FWA have done brilliantly to cash in on the fan appeal of World of Sport which can be seen on The Wrestling Channel. The match between Steve Gray and Mal Sanders should be a classic old school affair and will hopefully help build on and develop the success of the weekly World of Sport show on The Wrestling Channel by demonstrating their skills to todayís youth at Brent Town Hall.

Scott Conway this week has finally announced which UK stars he will be bringing over to Thailand for his first tour over there. This is news we have been fearing here at Wrestling 101 for some time because as Scott had so many connections through his promoting in the UK he could just about get anybody he wanted to work for him and to deprive the UK fans of some itís top stars for three months is a bit of a blow.

He hasnít taken as many guys as I thought he would but this is all down to the law on foreign workers in Thailand. He has taken Jonny Storm, Baxter Burridge, Phil Lea and Charlie Rage. On top of this he will have stars from all over the world working his show and Paul Travell will be going out there at some point to work a few shows.

Losing Jonny Storm for three month will play havoc with some storylines here in the UK and may have promoters pulling their hair out. After Jody Fleisch retired last year Jonny has had to work harder than ever with bookings all over the place. At the moment he is the Peoples Champion in All Star and the XPW European Champion in the FWA. Will he be stripped of these titles or will he be able to defend them when he comes back only time will tell but all we can say from Wrestling 101 is that we hope you have a successful tour in Thailand Jonny and come back in one piece.

There has been lots of brilliant UK Scene content added to 101 this week including the excellent Saracenís latest Tenet this week on goal setting and a brilliant interview by Goldy with FCW tag team the British Connection so be sure to check them out.

So that brings me to the end of my penultimate column before my summer adventure. Never fear though as even though I wonít be here the weekly UK Scene column will be continuing during my absence so Wrestling 101 will still be your first stop for British wrestling news. Next weeks column will be looking forward to the summer of British wrestling and my predictions on what will be happening whilst I am away on what the state of the UK Scene will be like when I get back.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
