UK Scene #142

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Welcome one and all to another plunge in to the UK grapple game. We are now officially a month away from British Uprising 3 and tickets are finally on sale. Colt Cobana is adding dates and appearances to his UK tour every day so it’s now almost impossible to miss his act in the UK. After an impressive debut show featuring Shane Douglas NCW are back with another show in Reading called “Halloween Holocaust” so be sure to look out for all of that and more as we start the ball rolling on yet another splendid column.

So we are now a month away from the biggest British wrestling show in recent history FWA British Uprising 3 and it seems all the fans can do is moan about it. The FWA put themselves on the line and risk it all to put British Wrestling on the map and make the conversion from the underground and the internet to mainstream and I think we should be commending this.

Some of the arguments and moans on the Internet do make me laugh at the moment though. My favourite one was D’Lo Brown has already appeared in the FWA. Must give them top marks for observation but when you tune in to Raw every week are you expecting to see different stars every week? If you go to see a British promotion are you expecting to see different wrestlers each week?

It gets funnier than that as I go on to the Internet this morning and see that Terry Funk is going to be appearing at Uprising, and the same people that said they need to bring in people that haven’t been on FWA are having a moan at the prospect of Funk. The hilarity does not end there as just to add weight to the moaners arguments one of them then says I will save my money for Super Dragon a week later now correct me if I am imagining things but wasn’t he in the country in the last two weeks. You really have to love smarts who have less logic than those that decided we should go to war with Iraq and at least they captured Saddam.

It looks like Colt Cobana will be getting his moneys worth out of his trip to the UK as he constantly adds dates to his October tour. He is touring for All Star Wrestling but will also be working for regional promotions around the country including FCW, TAP, FSW, GPW, Premier Promotions and BCW. This will mean it is nearly impossible not to catch him. I think it is sensible for him to try and make the most out of his time away from the US Scene as his absence could hurt his position in the pecking order over in the states so he might as well make it worth it.

This tour reminds me of when American Dragon came down for a few months to work with All Star. Over the last couple of years we have seen Brian Dixon slowly move towards the smart wrestling fan market by bringing in Indy stars and away from the washed up has been ex WWF stars. I think it is good that he is bringing in quality wrestlers but saying that his product use to be distinctively different to everything else that was out there and now he is slowly trying to change the image of All Star quite like what Scott Conway did with TWA before he left for Thailand.

Saturday the 30th of October will see the long awaited return of NCW to the Riverside leisure centre in Reading. After a highly successful show back in March the promotion are back in full swing with a plan to bring us monthly events and a host of British and American stars. This time round tickets are a very affordable ten pounds with stars including Flatliner and Andy Simmonz already lined up.

One of the major selling points is the teaser that a major American star will be making his return to the ring after a hiatus from the world of pro-wrestling. No doubt rumours will be flying left and right but if they deliver like they did with Shane Douglas it should be worth the admission fee alone. To book your tickets phone: 0118 901 5000.

I should start a new section like a home shopping channel with mega deal of the week as this week it would be FCW and their show on the 2nd of November as they bring you a card featuring Colt Cobana, D’lo Brown and Chris Hero all for £8 yes that’s right it can’t get any lower. The event takes place at The Saddlers Club (Walsall FC’s Bescot Stadium). To get your hands on this mega deal ring 07950 95677 or by emailing [tickets@futurewrestling.co.uk]

This week it has been announced after a highly successful run around the country RBW will be going back to where it all started at the Victoria Leisure Centre in Nottingham for a big event in November. The event two years ago crowned a new British Middleweight champion in “the misfit” Jorge Costano so who knows what will happen this time when they invade Nottingham on the 27th of November.

Remember all you guys who are lucky enough to have tickets to the Raw and Smackdown tapings be sure to keep an eye out for UK stars making their appearances in dark matches. Burchill, Drew McDonald, Robbie Brookside and Thunder will all have the opportunity to work in front of packed crowd of 20,000 in a WWE ring which is the dream of most wrestlers around the world.

I’m not sure if they will be competing against each other but hopefully they will be paired with some WWE stars which would be an awesome achievement to have on your CV. I’m not surprised Robbie Brookside and Drew Mcdonald both got dark matches due to them being ex WCW and Robbie being good friends with Chris Jericho but this quite an achievement for Burchill and Thunder that I hope they really enjoy.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
