UK Scene #144

24 October 2004

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Hey guys and welcome and all to another reflection on 7 days in the UK grapple game. It’s been a highly interesting week which has seen the announcement of a return to the squared circle of one of the true modern era greats if even if it may only be one for night. I will also be talking about the huge TWC announcement to announce another announcement as well as all the news opinions you have come to expect from my weekly rambling so please enjoy.

I just wanted to say huge thank you to all those that tuned and listened to me last weekend on BBC 7 had a real blast doing it. For those of you who didn’t listen where were you? Basically I was talking to a 9 – 11 year old audience about wrestling and the WWE. I managed to get a quick plug in for British Uprising III as well as talk about the UK guys who were on the WWE UK tour so I was chuffed with that. For those of you who did listen how Kayfabe was I? They should start calling me Mr. Kayfabe!

Now less of me talking about me and more of me talking about the UK Scene I think.

After a lot of uncertainty and a lot of unknowing the Phoenix Jody Fleisch has decided to step out of the darkness and return to the ring for British Uprising III. When Jody left around this time last year it was a major blow to the UK Scene on a par if not greater than losing the Wrestling show on Talksport. Jody was the UK’s best ambassador wowing crowds around the world and because of this he was seen rightly so as the UK’s golden boy and that on his shoulders it would be brought to new heights.

The dream turned sour though as Jody like a Phoenix from the flames disappeared in to the ether. No real reason given, no big fanfare and no statement from the man himself. A man on top of his game, in his prime and with the adulation of fans everywhere he went, no one was quite sure why he decided to go. This was because Jody wanted it this way and as fans the majority of us although upset with his decision could only respect him for it after all the hours of enjoyment he gave us.

Jody has decided that now is the time to come back in front of the UK Scene faithful at the biggest stage of the year and I commend him for it. Over the last year it has only been those close to him that know the real reasons why he left and hopefully on November 13th he might be able to share with the world. If nothing else though he will get the chance to do something he deserves more than anything and that’s to say goodbye to the UK fans if that is his choice as he didn’t get the chance to when he left. So to me it doesn’t bother me which Americans they have on the card to finally see Jody in a FWA ring again is priceless.

Now this week The Wrestling Channel have made a big announcement to announce an even bigger announcement that will be taking place next week on The Bagpipe Report. Now I’m not a big fan as you know of these pre announcement things but it has had its desired effect as the Internet fans run up pages and pages of ideas on what the announcement could be.

I’m not going to be like others and claim I know, I’m not disputing that some people don’t know as that is what you want to happen by doing a pre announcement. I do think though I have an educated guess as to what it could be. I do however think it will be some way linked to the FWA as they have the news of this announcement plastered all over there website at the moment. I think though that it could be something along the lines of a TWC produced live event maybe using FWA stars alongside stars from the other promotions featured on their station. Though the funniest suggestion I have seen is that the announcement could be that Blake is finally getting a video phone in the studio to give him a reason for looking at the telephone all the time when he has a guest on the line.

Now last week I touched on the fact that an opponent was still to be announced to face Burchill in a tables, ladders and chairs match at the IWP event The Second Coming on the 6th of November. Well there wasn’t anyone crazy enough to get involved in the UK so they had to go further a field and enlist the services of D’Lo Brown to take on this man monster in what should be a hellacious match.

Now I must speak on a successful period which has gone by quite quietly for one wrestler and that being one half of the New Breed, Ashe. Now coming from one of the most successful UK tag teams of modern times and then to go in to singles competition with outstanding success shows how much of a decent wrestler he is as he currently holds the WAW British Championship and has just come off a run as EWW Heavyweight champion. So I must give major props to the man and ask why isn’t he getting the exposure he deserves?

While I’m shouting out to some guys I must also give a shout out to one my favourite UK wrestlers Carl Mizzery who competed in his first match this year last week beating Johnny Pesci on the first leg of BRAWL’s Children in Need Tour. I hope this is a return to active wrestling as he has been missed this year.

So that’s me signing out for this week thanking you once again for making sense of my ramblings and I will hopefully catch up with you all again shall we say same place, same time next week does that work for you

Until next time,

Adam Sibley

ST: Do not talk to me about fake
By Saz on 6 January 2008
There’s a saying in wrestling. The person who says that wrestling is fake knows nothing about wrestling at all. Say fake to people like Chris Benoit whose “fake” concussions turned him insane, say fake to Sid whose leg broke in half after the merest of falls, say fake to every single wrestler who has been through agony [...]
ST: What does TV do for the UK Scene?
By Saz on 27 November 2007
Being a professional wrestler can be such an enjoyable experience, yet, sometimes such a frustrating one. There is that old school opinion that wrestling is built from respect and that your time and your actions deserve the opportunities that you get. I know my place in the scheme of things, I have my rung on the [...]
ST: Time to get the attitude right

You know, when I came back from Spain, a few things dawned on me. The first being how stuck up our own arses we Brits are. Bear with me on this, I am going somewhere with this.
 ST: Viva l?Espania!

Howdo, Your friendly neighbourhood Saz here, coming to you live from Tarragona, that would be on the South coast of Spain for all you non geography types. Yup, ole Sazza is sitting here supping Cevesa enjoying the sand, sea, sun, sangria and senoritas!
 ST: More wrestler ramblings
By Saz on 22 July 2007
I mentioned in the UK scene that I think that British wrestling is beginning to carve out a niche of its own, separate to the direct influence of the Americans. There will always be influence of course, that can’t be denied a good idea that works should always be used and the great thing about the [...]
