Welcome one and all on another jaunt through the news circulating the UK scene. This week we will be talking about the big joint NWA / IWF show that went down, I will also talk about the launch of the new FWA gyms which happened this week as well as all your regular news, views and reviews you come to expect from me. So sit back relax and enjoy reading.
Now on Thursday night were you doing the nightshift at work with the TV on or were you an insomniac in front of the TV well if you were any of those you would of got an unexpected treat and I’m not talking about channel 4’s documentary on swinging. There is an infrequent docu-soap programme that runs on late night ITV which I try and catch which is called “Redcoats.” As you guessed its about life at the world famous Bultins camp and on Thursday night British wrestling was featured quite heavily.
For the first half of the programme most of the segments revolved around an All Star wrestling show which are a frequent thing at the camps. They showed bits and pieces from a tag match involved Doug Williams and PN Neuz. Of course the redcoats were getting involved doing commentary and even getting involved in the action. Ok the viewing figures of the programme will probably compare to late night runs of Judge Judy but as they say any exposure is better than none.
So to the show that made a small piece of history the NWA / IWF. Like I said in my column last week I think this is the first joint show the NWA have been involved in. Now yes joint shows are now becoming quite popular but for the NWA who like to keep themselves to themselves it was a huge deal. The Consett Civic Hall played host to the event which has seen many good cards of wrestling before so it was a fitting venue for this event.
The main event was a match that any promotion would be proud to have on their card with NWA’s champion Johnny Moss defeating the wrestler with a cult following from IWF that of course being Assassin. The card also featured up and coming talent in the likes of JP Monroe and Shaun Avery, a class act tag team in Fergal Divitt & Paul Tracey as well as the awesome talents of Conscience. So these two promotions came together to put on one hell of a card after early doubts due to only one NWA-UK star being advertised in the early stages. I’m not sure what the crowd size was but I hope they drew well.
After weeks of anticipation since the announcement of the nationwide FWA gyms, the wait has now ended. FWA South London was officially opened this weekend by Alex Shane and Tony Scarlo. Whilst in Ireland they were opening the Irish Whip Wrestling – Frontier gym which will be lead by Darren Burridge and Stevie Knight. Both these schools will be teaching the FWA wrestling syllabus and will hopefully be a part in an increasing number of FWA gyms around the country.
These gyms should see an injection of new talent appearing on FWA shows and should be part of FWA’s continued growth. As well as the lack of live shows, training facilities have been been well documented as a problem FWA has. For years the FWA have had the best training facility in the country down in Portsmouth but many fans have complained about not being able to get down there and now having facilities near them of the same standard so hopefully now at least one problem has been answered.
The main event for IPW:UK’s next big event “Return of the Dragon” looks set to be a high flying affair. This week Aviv Maayan has decided to fight fire with fire by announcing that El Generico from IWS will be his tag partner to go against Stevie Douglas and Super Dragon. El Generico and Super Dragon are no strangers to each other following their contests in PWG. This huge show on March 20th will also feature the IPW:UK debut of Roh Star Samoa Joe.
Now talking about big events IWW already promoting a supercard on the 20th March from the SFX arena have now announced another big event for March 24th. This time the forum in Waterford city will play host to the NWA:TNA star. The event will also feature M-Dogg 20, Red Vinny, Shamus O’Shaunessy and Jonny Storm. It has been announced that Jonny Storm and Jimmy Ocean will compete for the new WAW British Lightweight title on March 11th in Canvey Island. These two have been selected due to their super bout last August in Great Yarmouth and whoever wins it will be a deserving champion. The card is also in for the 2nd annual WAW “Who Dares Wins” show in Norwich at the Talk.
