UK Scene #160

19 February 2005

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Welcome one and all to another reality check on what is happening right now in the UK Scene. This week I will be discussing the closure of another promotion in UWL (Ultimate Wrestling League or should I say Urban Wrestling League). FWA have announced the full card for New Frontiers this week so I will be talking in detail about that’s as well as many other stories making the news this week. SO please do join me once again for another look deep inside the UK Scene.

We are now officially a week away from FWA’s first show of the year “New Frontiers” from the Broxbourne Civic Hall. We have had to wait over two months since “Gold Rush” in December for this event so anticipation is now reaching fever pitch. The FWA promise to enter 2005 with a bang as they deliver a stacked card of action. The full card looks like this:

  • FWA British Heavyweight Championship Match
‘The Showstealer' Alex Shane v ‘The Wonderkid' Jonny Storm
  • Special Announcement
    By ‘The Phoenix' Jody Fleisch
  • FWA All-England Championship Match
‘The South City Thriller' Hade Vansen v Spud
  • Zebra returns, Hero debuts
The Zebra Kid v Chris Hero
  • The First Ever FWA Open Door Invitational
Who Gets to Wrestle? The Fans Decide! Already announced are ‘Superstar' Tony Sefton, Heresy, Max Voltage, ‘The Golden Boy' Cameron Knite, Jack Storm, ‘The Raging Bull' TJ Cain, Johnny Phere, JC Thunder, Jamie Idol and Dragon Phoenix. (Please note – the FWA regrets to announce that Carbon has had to withdraw from the Open Door Invitational.)
  • Non-Title Tune-Up Match
FWA Tag Team Champions The Duke of Danger and Simmons (with Buttercup) v Declan O'Connor and Joey Hayes
  • James Tighe and Mark ‘Five Star' Belton v Aviv Maayan and Ross Jordan
  • Jack Xavier v Leroy Kincade
  • Final Eliminator for the FWA All-England Title
  • ‘The Specialist' Mark Sloan (with the EntouRAGE and Stevie Knight) v Stevie Lynn
  • T he FWA main show debut of Dirk Feelgood

Ok so the card doesn’t have a heavy influx of US stars that you come to expect from big cards but I think it’s about time for the UK stars to start stealing the show which I think they will do next weekend. Chris Hero’s debut in FWA does give the event a bit of a special feel though so it is a well thought about inclusion by the FWA. Chris Hero goes against the returning Zebra Kid which will be a good match to watch as Zebra rarely gets to wrestle the US imports on FWA shows.

The main talking point coming out of the event may not even be a match result or a performance by a wrestler which leaves us in a little state of unknown going in to the event. Everyone is waiting to see what Jodie Fleisch’s big announcement will be which threatens to upstage the whole proceedings. I for one hope he has decided to make his come back in to the UK wrestling scene but then again I am the eternal optimist and I wont be surprised if FWA try to keep us on our toes by giving us something we weren’t quite expecting.

So let’s talk about the UWL closure this week. It’s been a weird week for the promotion as early in the week they made an announcement offering two opportunities for aspiring female wrestlers to join their ranks to add to their already growing number of female wrestlers. In this press release they also announced that they are involved in an independent film and part of a documentary series which was stated to be nothing to do with wrestling. As they say though any exposure is good exposure as we learnt last week from the TV show “Redcoats” (Was a dire episode this week in my opinion, bring back the wrestling!). So when they announced at the end of the week they were closing down which was strange from a promotion that rarely made any announcements to go to two in one week.

This item of news raises the age old discussion of does it help the UK Scene to have promotions starting and folding every week. I think personally the UK Scene needs some stability as if you don’t travel outside of your local town and only promotion only ever runs shows there if they close we lose you as a fan. If there were only a couple of big promotions in the UK like back in the days of the old Joint Promotions and we amalgamated all the smaller feds into these bigger feds like the old US territory purchasing that Vince McMahon did I think we would be in a healthier state. Saying this though the more live shows we have in the country the better so it is a loss when we lose a promotion.

It is a shame UWL folded when it did as they seemed to be building up a healthy base of female wrestlers and the promoter (Honey Ryder) seemed to be fully behind pushing the female wrestlers within the promotion. Which is something rarely done outside the extreme north of the country. I wish everyone that was involved in UWL the best of luck with all future endeavours.

For the first time ever the FCW championship will be going abroad in March. Following on from the big FWA storyline when Doug had to go over to the states to win back the FWA championship, “Tomkat” Kevin O’neil will have to go to Holland and Dutch Championship wrestling to try and win the title away from Laken Xander at their event “Unbreakable.” The one bit of good news is that whatever happens the title will be coming home to England after the event. This is another big achievement for FCW and I continue to congratulate them on all the progress they are making. Keep it up guys.

Finally this week I must mention my boy Carl Mizzery’s new website. I was suppose to mention it last week but the overdose of Pepsi must have gone to my head. The website helps to promote his comeback to the UK Scene. The website has news, commentaries, gallery, upcoming shows etc. All the good stuff you would expect from the Dark Angel and you can visit the site by going to http://www.mizzery.2ya.com

Until next time,

Adam Sibley

ST: Do not talk to me about fake
By Saz on 6 January 2008
There’s a saying in wrestling. The person who says that wrestling is fake knows nothing about wrestling at all. Say fake to people like Chris Benoit whose “fake” concussions turned him insane, say fake to Sid whose leg broke in half after the merest of falls, say fake to every single wrestler who has been through agony [...]
ST: What does TV do for the UK Scene?
By Saz on 27 November 2007
Being a professional wrestler can be such an enjoyable experience, yet, sometimes such a frustrating one. There is that old school opinion that wrestling is built from respect and that your time and your actions deserve the opportunities that you get. I know my place in the scheme of things, I have my rung on the [...]

You know, when I came back from Spain, a few things dawned on me. The first being how stuck up our own arses we Brits are. Bear with me on this, I am going somewhere with this.

Howdo, Your friendly neighbourhood Saz here, coming to you live from Tarragona, that would be on the South coast of Spain for all you non geography types. Yup, ole Sazza is sitting here supping Cevesa enjoying the sand, sea, sun, sangria and senoritas!
 ST: More wrestler ramblings
By Saz on 22 July 2007
I mentioned in the UK scene that I think that British wrestling is beginning to carve out a niche of its own, separate to the direct influence of the Americans. There will always be influence of course, that can’t be denied a good idea that works should always be used and the great thing about the [...]
