UK Scene #163

12 March 2005

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Welcome one and all to another insightful look at the last 7 days in the British wrestling game. You join me on the verge of a stressful week as most university students will sympathize with as we find ourselves a week away from deadlines but hey Easter holidays are just around the corner. This week I will be talking about the continued rise of 3CW, the invasion of Chavs into the UK scene, shoot interviews and much more so please do read on.

Still only being a very young and small promotion 3CW like many smaller promotions are currently working hard to establish their place in the UK Scene. After some really successful events they are now starting to up the stakes. First they signed a deal with IWF to do a joint show hot off IWF’s involvement with NWA-UK. This in its own right is a good bit of news as this will see 3CW forming links and seeing what IWF has to offer.

3CW turned up the heat this week with the announcement that UFC star and current Cage Rage champion Ian “The Machine” Freeman would be appearing at an 3CW vs IWF show on March 25th in Acklam. This won’t be Ian’s first involvement with professional wrestling as he has been asked to appear at various UK events but it is still a major achievement for such a promotion to get him on their card. The event will be headlined by Ice XVII defends his title against Assassin, and this week our very own Daniel Evans caught up with the champ for an interview.

First we had the Chavs invading IPW:UK then we saw them at FWA New Frontiers but what in my opinion could be of the hottest gimmicks of the year have been cleared to come back to IPW:UK. On March 20th they will take part in the big card on March 20th at Orpington Halls. One half of the chav army Flaming Red will tag with a mystery partner to go against Paul Travell and a partner of his choosing on a card with already involves Super Dragon and Samoa Joe.

The chav gimmick is being used like I say by a few guys in the UK Scene right now and because it is such a hot social issue if done right I think it could be one of the greatest gimmicks of the year. It will be very interesting to see who can pull the gimmick off the best and uses it to its full potential. Remember though just because I think it is a good idea could we please not have every promotion having a chav character.

For the first time every aspiring wrestlers in the UK will be able to experience a Japanese dojo style training session without having to leave the country. The guys from top Japanese promotion NOAH will be coming to FWA Manchester. This one off event is happening on March 17th and is open to everyone. The session will be lead by Mitsuhara Misawa, Yoshinari Ogawa and a man with a lot of experience at NOAH Doug Williams.

NOAH has been popular in the UK for some time now thanks to tape traders making their events accessible to the masses and since then The Wrestling Channel have taken over flying the flag for NOAH by airing weekly NOAH shows. The Japanese style is respected and renowned all over the world so this is truly a great learning experience for any up and coming wrestlers or any wrestler looking to add something to his game. For more information log on to FrontierWrestling.com.

One thing I have been noticing recently is the increasing number of shoot interviews by UK wrestlers available to buy in the UK with everyone seeming to be jumping on the bandwagon. I personally think it is a good idea as it is another way people can make money from the UK Scene that being the wrestlers involved and the people that make them. With the fact being that British wrestling is scene by many as an underground activity it fits in well and will hopefully spark more interest. You can currently purchase shoots by Jody Fleisch, Jonny Storm, Burchill and I believe Ricky Knight is releasing one soon. If any of the production companies that make these shoots would like to send me a copy I would love to do a review for the site.

As always it wouldn’t be a UK Scene column without our Brits abroad. On April 30th France is the destination for a lot of our guys as they perform for ICWA. The UK Pitbulls will be defending their ICWA tag titles and Doug Williams will be making his return to France. Also on the card sees the ICWA debuts of Zebra Kid, Spud and Majik. I want to give a big shout to all those guys especially Majik who finally seems to be getting the recognition he deserves.

Hade Vanson will get a rare chance to main event a FWA event on March 26th as he takes on Raven at the Morecambe dome for the All England title. Also on the card is:

  • Tag Team Grudge Match
‘The Wonderkid’ Jonny Storm and Aviv Maayan v James Tighe and Mark ‘Five Star’ Belton
  • The First Ever FWA Flyweight Title Tournament – First Round
    Spud v Jack Storm
    Max Voltage v ?
  • FWA Manchester Guest Match
  • Doctor in the House – Dr Dirk Feelgood makes an appearance

The tag team match looks interesting as they continue to develop the feud before Jody Fleisch makes his return.

Finally this week on Apri 8th a new LDN champion will be crowned as Ross Jordan goes against Martin Stone. This due to Ashe vacating the title he won at LDN’s debut show for refusing to fight a rematch against Martin Stone. The event take place at Brentide High School so be sure to get to that one if you can.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley

ST: Do not talk to me about fake
By Saz on 6 January 2008
There’s a saying in wrestling. The person who says that wrestling is fake knows nothing about wrestling at all. Say fake to people like Chris Benoit whose “fake” concussions turned him insane, say fake to Sid whose leg broke in half after the merest of falls, say fake to every single wrestler who has been through agony [...]
ST: What does TV do for the UK Scene?
By Saz on 27 November 2007
Being a professional wrestler can be such an enjoyable experience, yet, sometimes such a frustrating one. There is that old school opinion that wrestling is built from respect and that your time and your actions deserve the opportunities that you get. I know my place in the scheme of things, I have my rung on the [...]

You know, when I came back from Spain, a few things dawned on me. The first being how stuck up our own arses we Brits are. Bear with me on this, I am going somewhere with this.

Howdo, Your friendly neighbourhood Saz here, coming to you live from Tarragona, that would be on the South coast of Spain for all you non geography types. Yup, ole Sazza is sitting here supping Cevesa enjoying the sand, sea, sun, sangria and senoritas!

I mentioned in the UK scene that I think that British wrestling is beginning to carve out a niche of its own, separate to the direct influence of the Americans. There will always be influence of course, that can’t be denied a good idea that works should always be used and the great thing about the [...]
