Lexx Interview

15 January 2005

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

I have always felt that British female wrestlers never get a good break. Although not many British males have made it big in the world of wrestling, there are absolutely no females. And no, Klondyke Kate or the Sweet Saraya don't count.

However, recently I had the chance to speak to Lexx. A kick-ass girl if ever I saw one. So we sat down and got nattering and here's what she had to say...

First and foremost, Lexx, I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions for Wrestling 101, it is very much appreciated.

No worries, it's a pleasure.

So onto question one and where did you grow up, how did you get into wrestling and what made you want to step into the ring?

I grew up in a small town that nobody ever seems to have heard of, called Hetton which is situated between Sunderland and Durham. I got into wrestling when I was about seven or eight years old, and my brother sat me down to watch a WWF video. I didn't think much of it at first until I clapped eyes on Roddy Piper. There was just something about him that caught my eye and made me want to watch more. From then on I guess I was hooked. But it was Shawn Michaels that first made me think that wrestling was something that someday I would like to do.

Who trained you, how old were you when you started, and what was the reaction of the other students like where you trained, to a female joining their class?

I first started training at Adam Brown's ProWrestling School when I was 19 years old. There wasn't much of a reaction to my gender since there were two or three other female students at the time. After a few months Adam Brown and wZw parted ways, Adam setting up his own promotion and wZw opening their own school. From that point onward I trained with wZw and was the only female trainee for about a year. I was trained by Carl Turner (GTS), Iceman and Spitfire. I've also been trained by Mark Sloan (FWA), Highlander (BCW), Stevie Knight and D'Lo Brown.

How long did you have to train before you had your first match in front of a crowd, what was the occasion and what was the outcome of the match?

My first match was at wZw's Monday Night Mayhem on 30th June 2003, about 9 months after I started training. It was a Trainee Academy match and I was up against Iain Robinson who was also making his debut. I managed to pick up the win after executing a Lowrider, which you probably know as either a Rocker Dropper or Fame Asser. Iain went on to become one half of the tag team sensation Full Pack with my boyfriend, Micky L.

Where did it go from here? You seem to have plenty of fans around the country, so how did you progress from a rookie to someone who the fans accepted quickly and started to follow? Every British wrestling website/message board I go to seems to have something about you on it.

I have fans? Cool! Seriously though, I spent a lot of time doing ring photography for wZw and I guess people accepted me because I always took time to talk to them at shows and online too.

You obviously see yourself more as a serious female talent as opposed to the tits and ass WWE style of women’s wrestling. Not suggesting that what you wear in the ring is not sexy, but if you were asked to don a bra and thong to wrestle in what would you say?

I'd say no. There's a time and place for that sort of wardrobe and it's either the bedroom or FHM!

Why do you think the WWE needs to have its surgically enhanced Divas strip and have all these bra and panties matches? You are far more beautiful than any of them, so why can’t they do it your way?

Thank you for the compliment. My opinion is that the WWE have no real idea how to really market women's wrestling. I don't think they take it seriously at all and what's worse - and this is simply my opinion - is that I don't think even the WWE Divas take it all that seriously either. I think that in the minds of the WWE, men will only watch women if they are in these ridiculous matches. I know a lot of guys who complain that there aren't enough decent women's wrestling matches and this is mostly because of what they've seen on WWE shows.

What advice would you give to a young British female aiming to get into the biz?

Jeez, I'm probably the last person who should give anyone advice, ha ha! I guess the best advice I can give them is the advice given to me by D'Lo Brown and that is not to let the guys in this business take advantage. Keep focused on what you want and don't let any guy - or anyone for that matter - tell you you're not good enough to be what you want to be.

Moving on to more recent issues: You recently told me that you have left wZw and are on a hiatus from the world of wrestling. Why is this? When do you see yourself returning?

My reason for leaving wZw is personal. It's a great company and Gary Graham is a fantastic promoter to work for. My hiatus from wrestling was mostly due to Christmas work. As most people know its a busy time of year and I even had to turn down a booking in Manchester because of it, I was absolutely gutted about that. My hard work paid off though because it gave me a chance to clear my head and focus for the New Year. As for when I'll be back... keep your eyes open.

What are your goals for the future and where do you see yourself performing (if you do return)?

I just want to keep on wrestling for as long as my body holds out, and hopefully someday go to America.

Now finally, I’d like to ask you a few short ‘frequently asked questions’ style questions.

ST: Do not talk to me about fake
By Saz on 6 January 2008
There’s a saying in wrestling. The person who says that wrestling is fake knows nothing about wrestling at all. Say fake to people like Chris Benoit whose “fake” concussions turned him insane, say fake to Sid whose leg broke in half after the merest of falls, say fake to every single wrestler who has been through agony [...]
ST: What does TV do for the UK Scene?
By Saz on 27 November 2007
Being a professional wrestler can be such an enjoyable experience, yet, sometimes such a frustrating one. There is that old school opinion that wrestling is built from respect and that your time and your actions deserve the opportunities that you get. I know my place in the scheme of things, I have my rung on the [...]

You know, when I came back from Spain, a few things dawned on me. The first being how stuck up our own arses we Brits are. Bear with me on this, I am going somewhere with this.

Howdo, Your friendly neighbourhood Saz here, coming to you live from Tarragona, that would be on the South coast of Spain for all you non geography types. Yup, ole Sazza is sitting here supping Cevesa enjoying the sand, sea, sun, sangria and senoritas!

I mentioned in the UK scene that I think that British wrestling is beginning to carve out a niche of its own, separate to the direct influence of the Americans. There will always be influence of course, that can’t be denied a good idea that works should always be used and the great thing about the [...]
