Scott Future Interview

8 August 2003

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

I recently got chance to talk to Scott Future when he got back from his latest American adventure. Since emerging on the scene 4 years he has been making headlines fro himself in the wrestling business. Here’s what he had to say for his career and the wrestling industry today.

How did you first get in to wrestling?

I used to watch WWF late nights on ITV. Back in the days when the Hart Foundation used to war with the British Bulldogs and the Ultimate Warrior was destroying the Honky Tonk Man. Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and the Junk Yard Dog were all great entertainers and they made me realise that wrestling was an art form of sorts.

In 1997 I went to WrestleMania 13 in Chicago as a fan and Justin Credible (Aldo Montoya at that time) joked that with my height I would "Kick his Ass" if I became a wrestler. I’m sure he has forgot now but I never did. I went to the Hammerlock Wrestling School that summer and a year later made my debut.

You made your debut on August 18th 1998 in Margate, Kent. What promotion was that for, who was your opponent and what was it like?

That was for Hammerlock against Gary Steele. That was a rush because I had never performed infront of such a large crowd before, doing anything, in my life. I was surprised to hear a few cheers for me. The match went OK, great for a debut I guess.

In under 2 minutes I was pounded into the ground and pinned. I was later told to feel lucky since at this time in Hammerlock, debuts usually only lasted around a minute! But it got me on the road to being a wrestler and I have great memories of that time.

What was your trip to Texas like, talk to us about the two shows you did?

OK, well the first show was for Warriors of Wrestling which is run by "Tugboat" Thomas, who is a wrestling veteran, who has worked in many promotions. This was against WWF Tough Enough's Chris Harvard on my Birthday which was kind of strange. It was an exhibition style match and we did everything from Headlocks to more faster paced wrestling. That was a great experience and I thank Chris. We were told that it was the best match of the night which was nice because there was other great talent on that card.

The following show was huge, a sellout which is estimated at more than 1,000. The set up was excellent too. The show was filmed for a simulcast to be shown throughout the Race Track complex that staged the event. The Main Event was Buff Bagwell vs Chaz Warrington and also on the show was Chris Harvard, Rey Mysterio Jr and Konnan.

My match was billed as a light heavyweight match and I relished this opportunity. The match was actually great and again I was credited by the officials in Houston which is a real honour because of the great history in Houston for Wrestling.

My opponent "Fast Eddie" was superb also. It was a great trip.

You are quite renowned now in the states after last year like wrestling Lenny Lane (former WCW Cruiserweight Champion) now involved with WWA and your most recent trip, do you plan to go back?

Yes I do, its already being spoken about.

What were your thoughts when your involvement with Wrestlexpress ended?

Disappointment and frustration over what might have been. People don't realise how big that deal was. But that’s the nature of wrestling now days. My involvement only ended because the company collapsed. There will be other opportunities I hope.

What are your thoughts on the current UK wrestling scene?

There are some great talents out there, my only concern is that we have to learn the ropes in a smaller ring. There is an adaption process involved with Wrestling in the States. I now find myself more comfortable in the larger rings. There are some great shows out there... go check them out!

What does 2002 have instore for Scott Future?

Well I guess I have to use my philosophy of trying to top each year with a better one. 2000 saw me working for ITV with Hammerlcok and I also went to Calgary and experienced the "Dungeon". In 2001 I signed the contract with WrestleXpress and went out to Iowa to face Lenny Lane. This year I have already had two great outings in Texas.

There are a few things I’m looking at, I get regular emails asking when I’m going to start up a school so that’s something I’m considering. If anyone is interested they could drop me an email at biz@scottfuture.com I’m also in the process of having a CD ROM with video etc.. of Scott Future and a new state of the art shockwave website is being done (soon to appear at ScottFuture.com) so there is a lot to look out for!

Thanks for your time any other thoughts?

Only to thank my supporters. I get a lot of support over the email and it does mean a lot. Keep an eye out for me and most of all keep enjoying wrestling!

God Bless.
