Iceberg Slim Interview

27 July 2003

Wrestling 101 US Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

On July 30th I had the opportunity to interview properly one of the craziest if not the craziest individual in Iceberg slim. This guy is a future hardcore King. He wrestles on the US Indy circuit and his personal friend is Abdullah The Butcher, and with a guy like Abby as your friend then there is no wonder Iceberg is such a blood thirsty individual. Although he is hardcore and a name that will soon be known world-wide there is no nicer person to chat to than Iceberg Slim.

First off I want to say what a pleasure it is to have you do a interview for Talk Wrestling Online / Wrestling 101.

The Pleasure is all mine.

Iceberg, can you tell us how you first got into wrestling?

Actually I was just bored with my life about 3 years ago and decided I needed to do something different. Wrestling turned out to be that something different.

What promotions have you worked for?

Wow that's a good question. Let's see: N.W.A., W.W.C., I.W.U., C.C.W., E.W.A., U.E.W., S.C.W.A., G.C.W., N.W.F., F.W.F., M.W.A., T.W.A., D.C.W., and probably a few more that I can't remember. Those companies are located in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky & Puerto Rico.

You have fought the likes of Abdullah The Butcher, what was it like fighting this great legend?

It was and is a dream come true! Abby has taught me so much about the business and has made many dreams a reality for me. For him I am grateful!

Any good Abby stories you can share with us?

Let's see. The one that really sticks out was when we were in Puerto Rico. We were taking a Taxi to the Hotel and the driver was drunk as hell. He was just singing loudly and beating his hands on the steering wheel as well as weaving all over the road. After about 5 minutes of this Abby went into gimmick and began screaming and singing and beating his hands on the dashboard of the car. It was the funniest thing because the louder the driver got, the louder Abby got. It was just too funny.

What was it like meeting The American Dream Dusty Rhodes?

It was great. I met him and asked if he would mind taking a picture with me. He said yes but right before the flash of the camera he asked if we would both fit in the picture. I laughed and told him I thought we would fit but they would probably charge me twice the price to develop it.

You're a very hardcore wrestler and your pictures prove that, but what has been the most sadistic match for you and who was it against?

Probably the first encounter with Abdullah. Because not only was I being forked by Abby, but I was being stapled by New Jack. It was pretty intense to say the least.

What has it been like wrestling in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico was awesome! That had to be the greatest experience for me yet. I met several Legends on that tour. One Man Gang, Carlos Colon, Curt Henning, Cuban Assassin, Mike Rotunda, Barry & Kendall Windham and Horace Hogan. All of those guys were great.

Where did the name Iceberg Slim come from?

I got that name while training one day. My trainer Homicide (or now known in the N.W.A. as Da Hood) just blurted it out one day and it stuck. I didn't like it at first but the fans took to it and it just stuck. I've been Iceberg Slim ever since.

Who has been the most influential person in your career?

It would be Abdullah hands down. He has done so much for me in this business as far as teaching me things. His knowledge of the business is vast and I try to soak it all in whenever I get a chance. Plus I pattern myself after him.

You seem to participate in a lot of hardcore matches any serious injuries you have gotten from this?

I suffered a broken leg 2 years ago in a match. That's the most serious injury to date.

Have you ever had stitches?

No I don't get stitches. I normally close my wounds with Super Glue. That may sound funny but it's the God's honest truth.

Where do you see yourself in the next 12 months?

I really don't know. I'd like to go on another tour of Puerto Rico as well as tour Japan and also the U.K.

I see you your talking of Japan, any offers for that or are you still in the early stages?

We're pretty much still in the talking stages of Japan. I would love to work in front of a Japanese audience. They seem to really appreciate the sport over there.

What's the most memorable moment for you while you have been in the wrestling biz?

Actually there are two. The first would have to be going out in front of 11,850 fans in San Juan P.R. at Hiram Bithorne Stadium. Helping the One Man Gang out against Abdullah and Carlos Colon. All three were childhood idols of mine and to be in the same ring with them was a dream come true. The second thing would have to be defeating Abdullah for the Brass Knuckles Championship earlier this year. Plus it happened in my hometown which made it that much more special.

Well I really got to wrap this interview up, but before we go any last comments for the readers of Talk Wrestling Online / Wrestling 101?

Yeah I do have a final comment for your readers. Look for Iceberg Slim to come to an arena near you in the not so distant future. I promise to bring you the violence and brutality that each and everyone of you need in your lives.

Well I hope to talk to you again soon, but I would like to wish you all the luck in your career from everyone here at Talk Wrestling Online / Wrestling 101.

Thanks alot, and with that I am OUT!

CBlog XXVIII- No Mercy, RAW and Cyber Sunday
By Cassidy Haslett on 8 October 2008
I know it’s been a little while since I’ve done a blog, but I’m back to give my thoughts on No Mercy, RAW, and the upcoming Cyber Sunday pay-per-view on October 26 (which, coincidentally, is CM Punk’s birthday and he is also the featured star on the poster). Let’s start with this past Sunday’s No Mercy [...]

By Cassidy Haslett on 18 September 2008
I did not post a blog last week because I did not feel that RAW was really worth posting a blog about. It was okay, but nothing much to discuss. This week, there is a bit more to discuss and I also wanted to provide my thoughts on SmackDown and the current line-up for No [...]
CBlog XXVI- Thoughts on WWE Unforgiven 2008
By Cassidy Haslett on 9 September 2008
The 10′th WWE Unforgiven in Cleveland was just awesome and worth the $39.95 I paid. Sure, every match was not great, but I look at the overall when I judge a pay-per-view. Here are my thoughts on Unforgiven:
CBlog XXV- WWE RAW, Rey and Unforgiven
By Cassidy Haslett on 2 September 2008
RAW was average to me this week. Granted, it may have been better had there not been spoilers on every single wrestling site or in every wrestling email I got after RAW was taped this past Sunday. It was nice to see Randy Orton make an appearance on RAW, even though it would have been [...]
CBlog XXIV- WWE RAW, Unforgiven & Cena?s Injury
By Cassidy Haslett on 26 August 2008
Let me start off with the unfortunate news - John Cena has a severely herniated disc in his neck and will require surgery, leaving him out of action, indefinitely. The probability of him making another early return seems very unlikely. With Cena gone from television for who knows how long, I for one will certainly [...]
