ST: A week on the road

By: Saz
22 February 2005

Wrestling 101 UK Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

I’ve had a great week this week, it has been non stop wrestling, from writing in the new TWO E-Fed “TWO Stars” to working in Wales, Malvern and Sheffield this week! So accept my apologies for this tenet being late as I have had little time to sit down and write.

I’m quite happy with the way my E-fed character is going at the moment. It has been pointed out to me recently that you have to have fun with a gimmick for it to work and I think the Chav is great fun to play!

There has been discussion as to whether my Character is a negative stereotype on the TWO forum, I think my answer is that stereotypes are there for a reason and that particular stereotype makes for an interesting and entertaining character.

As a wrestler though, E-feds are great, as I write it allows me to think about a match and go over some of the moves in my head as I think about how to describe the actions to a reader. It’s as helpful to me as it is entertaining a reader.

I didn’t know the Coalminers were card freaks, but I ended up having a discussion about gambling. Now I’ll make this clear, I don’t like to gamble, in fact the nearest I will ever get to gambling is putting £3 in a gambling machine, then stopping once that is done. However, the Coalminers really know their stuff and I got a lesson on how to beat the banker at Blackjack.

Obviously the Coalminers were quite popular in Wales, however, even I had to admit, the promotion did really well for its pilot show and it was great fun working on it!

I was in a tag on Friday that went really well, the audience was well up for some fun and it was an enjoyable match, finding ways to entertain people.

It does seem that I learn a new lesson every show, which is great, you can only do so much in the gym, you can practice your moves, you can know the ring inside out, but without an audience there you are a great part incomplete as a wrestler. I will admit that perhaps matches I am involved in aren’t the greatest in the world, but thanks to some great promotions that have given me the opportunity to hone my skills in the ring, I will improve and I hope I will be great fun to watch.

Saturday saw me wrestle For RPW, I always enjoy working for Blondie Barratt and Johnny Kidd as they are very calm promoters. I have found that nervous promoters (and there are a lot of them around mind) tend to translate their nerves onto me.

I’m not saying a promoter shouldn’t be nervous around me, they are after all riding a lot of money in the hope that they can pay their wrestlers and make a small profit, I think it is more due to both Blondie and Johnny’s experience within the business, they have probably seen every small to massive problem that could ever occur.

The drive up to Sheffield knocked the wind out of my sails though, I wasn’t my usual chatty self, but still managed to pull a match out of the bag, though I suspect it was more to do with having one of Britain’s wrestling geniuses to work against!
Johnny also reminded me of the time we were working in Felixstowe and he made the comment that, as we were all sitting around chatting, it would be really funny if the curtain fell down which, of course, 2 minutes later, it did.

Of course I can’t tell you just how much fun it is to be a wrestler and what a privilege it is to work with and against some of the best wrestling minds in the business, if it sounds like I’m showing off then I apologise, but I have worked damn hard to get where I am today. You really can’t do a couple of days training and learn a craft, and you cannot earn someone’s respect in a day.

The one thing I will encourage though is that it is ok to be a fan, if everyone were wrestlers, then there would be no one to cheer them on and to be a fan is to have all the power. I would also like to encourage all who want to be involved, but the actual wrestling is not their cup of tea, I strongly suggest you have a chat with your local promoter.

The business is crying out for people who will man cameras, announce and serve on sales tables, I have never been to a promotion where those people haven’t been treated with respect by any wrestler, so give it a go, wrestling needs you.

My apologies if it looks like I’m babbling, I have had a great week of wrestling and my mind has too much to say, so I hope I made sense.

Keep up the support!

Saracen

ST: Do not talk to me about fake
By Saz on 6 January 2008
There’s a saying in wrestling. The person who says that wrestling is fake knows nothing about wrestling at all. Say fake to people like Chris Benoit whose “fake” concussions turned him insane, say fake to Sid whose leg broke in half after the merest of falls, say fake to every single wrestler who has been through agony [...]
ST: What does TV do for the UK Scene?
By Saz on 27 November 2007
Being a professional wrestler can be such an enjoyable experience, yet, sometimes such a frustrating one. There is that old school opinion that wrestling is built from respect and that your time and your actions deserve the opportunities that you get. I know my place in the scheme of things, I have my rung on the [...]

You know, when I came back from Spain, a few things dawned on me. The first being how stuck up our own arses we Brits are. Bear with me on this, I am going somewhere with this.

Howdo, Your friendly neighbourhood Saz here, coming to you live from Tarragona, that would be on the South coast of Spain for all you non geography types. Yup, ole Sazza is sitting here supping Cevesa enjoying the sand, sea, sun, sangria and senoritas!
 ST: More wrestler ramblings

I mentioned in the UK scene that I think that British wrestling is beginning to carve out a niche of its own, separate to the direct influence of the Americans. There will always be influence of course, that can’t be denied a good idea that works should always be used and the great thing about the [...]
