TAT: WWE Vengeance 2004 Thoughts

By: Boyo
15 July 2004

Wrestling 101 US Scene RSS Feed | Feeds

Howdy my ever-faithful tatfans and welcome to this rather stand-offish article by your rather flushed out Boyo. You see, Boyo thinks this was a marvellous, magnificent PPV and an evil PPV at the same time. It was evil because what happened almost completely defied my predictions last week, it was magnificent because if I was a betting man I would have lost everything - and I didn't bet!

So while you're now breathing a huge sigh of relief at my monetary luck, I ask you to join me in this little Vengeane review.

We'll start off with the main event, Benoit vs Triple H. I enjoyed this match because it was a classic face vs heel match. Benoit was cheered, Triple H was booed, the wrestling was good, the crowd got involved, but unfortunately it didn't end clean. Triple H's manipulation of the down-trodden Eugene makes for some proper heat, but it also ended up in Triple H getting finished off by Eugene and Benoit getting a roll-up. I liked it but can now confirm that this lack of a clean victory for Benoit will surely result in Triple H winning at Summerslam. I also think we may have a gimmick match, too.

So, Edge is the new Intercontinental champ, is he? Nice one! And that's all I have to say on the matter. I just can't get truly excited about Edge accomplishing anything worthwhile but I will offer my congratulations to the guy! But what now for Orton? Will he be moved into the Heavyweight sphere? Will he win his belt back off Edge? Will he turn on Evolution? Oh the mystery! I personally will play safe and predict that Orton will be having a title shot at Edge in the coming weeks. Will he win it? You know...I think he might.

La Resistance had the most unremarkable title defence of all time, too. Actually, that may be a little harsh. The wrestling in this match was fun, it was classic, it was Federation Years material! I liked the fact that Flair and Eugene were cheered; it added a touch of class to the occasion. However the match would have ended perfectly in my opinion if there was a clean La Resistance victory, maybe by submission. Perhaps Eugene is getting too much of a push? He's indestructable!!

Batista confounded everyone by powerbombing his way to a clean victory over Jericho. Tajiri livened up a hastily thrown together tag match, tagging with Rhyno against Garrison Cade and the PPV ever-present 2004 Coachman. Matthew Hardy also poked one in my eye when he got a resounding victory over Kane, who I'm sure I spotted throwing a brick through a cafe window in the Algarve three weeks ago. Lastly, the two strongest women in the WWE, Molly and Victoria, put on a gallant effort and some good entertainment to determine who gets to fight Trish Stratus for the belt; the mind-boggling strong Victoria made short work of Molly and will hopefully do much the same against (ugh!) Trish.

Thanks for reading, and watch out for a couple of non-PPV related articles (yes they do exist...), coming soon!

Boyo

THWD: The Legacy Of Bret Hart
By Tink Holloway on 13 July 2008
In my opinion Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, his technique in the ring was unparalleled and he was arguably the most committed, hard-working individual in the history of the sport. At Wrestlemania 10 he put on, what is to this day, my favourite [...]
THWD: Do You Remember The First Time?
By Tink Holloway on 7 July 2008
Much has been written about CM Punk winning the world title on Raw this week. I personally like to view it with optimism, WWE television has been so stale lately that anything that breaks up the monotonous daily grind in the promotion has got to be a plus. Still I do understand [...]
THWD: WWE Raw Find?s It?s Feet
By Tink Holloway on 28 June 2008
WWE Draft RAW - June 23rd 2008 I have to admit to being mildly interested in this year?s Raw draft. WWE is in major need of a change and this was their chance to make those changes. I was convinced however that the creative geniuses behind the WWE would drop the ball again [...]
THWD: One Year On - The Benoit Problem
By Tink Holloway on 22 June 2008
Almost one year ago, news began filtering through that Chris Benoit, one of professional wrestling?s finest ever competitors had died at the age of 40. At first all of us, fans and the industry alike, mourned and wondered what exactly it was about professional wrestling that led to so many of [...]
THWD: The case for a WWE off-season
By Tink Holloway on 3 May 2008
My goodness, how long ago does Wrestlemania seem already!? Despite the WWE’s attempts to link everything they could at Backlash with WM24, the night felt far detached from the bright lights of the Citrus Bowl. It’s a shame that there is so little time to take in what happened at the biggest event of the [...]
