Str8 Gangster, No Chaser (Formerly: Monday Nyquil)
by Caliber Winfield on 21 February 2009

Well, we had a hell of a No Way Out, didn't we kids? I was there live, and had pretty bad-ass seats, so it was all that much greater for me. The whole thing was loaded with surprises. My entire section damn near passed out when Edge was eliminated so damn quickly...

Alright kids, without further ado, your boy presents you with the most gangster matches of 08'. Before we get started, I'll start with the honourable mentions. The Ladder of Love match was very nice, and honestly should have made the list, but I negated it for too long and it was left off. Also, I didn't get a chance to see any of the Christian vs. Angle matches from the beginning of the year, and I'm sure I would have loved that...

Fireworks pop, and the hard-rock always associated with pro-wrestling, at least in the last 10 years, plays on. The fireworks seem to give out and fizzle as the production team obviously scrambles and lights a couple of sparklers and ground snakes to make for a flashy entrance for this years emcee of the 2008 Caliber Winfield Straight Gangster, No Chaser Wrestling Awards, Caliber Winfield!

Ah, WCW. World Championship Wrestling. At one point the hottest wrestling company the world had ever known. Keep that in mind, however. At ONE point. From the start of the nWo angle, to 1997 Starrcade, WCW had it all. They were untouchable. So why is it they were regarded so highly when it was only a year and a half of good times? The early 90's? Laughable. The late 90's and early 00's? The worst example of pro-wrestling the world has ever known......ok, except for XPW.

As a wrestling fan, I read a ton of websites, articles, and reviews. It isn't the current news I'm so thirsty for, it's that I want to find awesome matches that I've never really heard spoken of before, that are not just worth a look, but highly praised. So I thought a section of my writings could be devoted to such things. Whether it's a match buried in the under card of an awesome PPV, or a match that had the unfortunate task of being included with some of the worst cards our beloved sport has to offer. I root, dig, and try to bring you classics you've never seen, or ones you saw but never stuck out and deserve a second look...

Something that I don't think gets enough light shown on it when it comes to wrestling columns, is great feuds. People forget more often times than not it's the great feuds, not the great matches that get people to tune in, to be interested. A great feud can escalate an otherwise normal match into the stratosphere...

Of course as we all know, the most beloved gimmick, and most well-known in wrestling is the steel cage match. It started with your standard steel fence grate, then the WWE gave it an upgrade with the big blue cage. Which, to be honest, I liked the most. I felt that that was truly a steel cage, not just a fence. Well, the WWE once again innovated what most thought couldn't be added to with the Hell in a Cell. From that point, you'd think there wasn't very much you could do. Well, the E proved us wrong again, and by E, I mean Eric. Eric Bischoff. He came up with the Elimination Chamber...

Here we are kids, the first annual Monday Nyquil Awards, honouring the best in wrestling for the year of 2007. There’s a good amount of people who say that 2007 was a bit of a slow year for the mat, but I really couldn’t disagree more. 2007 could very well be my most favourite year in wrestling. More classic matches have come out of this year, at least for me, than any other...
