THWD: The case for a WWE off-season
by Tink Holloway on 3 May 2008

My goodness, how long ago does Wrestlemania seem already!? Despite the WWE’s attempts to link everything they could at Backlash with WM24, the night felt far detached from the bright lights of the Citrus Bowl. It’s a shame that there is so little time to take in what happened at the biggest event of the year. Before you could blink, the following evening’s episode of Raw has happened and laid the foundations for the coming weeks programming. Even during the show itself, the WWE were promoting next month’s pay-per-view, already looking to their next big money event. As a consequence nothing lasts in wrestling anymore, one day JBL is just about beating Finlay in a ‘Belfast Brawl’ (denying poor Finlay and Hornswoggle any redemption over Layfield whatsoever) the next JBL is in a top line feud and on course to headline Backlash with Cena, Orton and Triple H. Worst of all for me though is the lack of closure you get from being a wrestling fan and this has led me to think maybe it’s time the WWE had an off-season?

THWD: MMA and Wrestling?
by Tink Holloway on 25 April 2008

I’d like to make a survey asking fans of professional wrestling why it is that they watch it. I wonder how many of them would answer because it’s a form of combat? I only wonder about this because over the last 3 or 4 years I’ve become increasingly perplexed at the close proximity of sports-entertainment and the ever-growing world of Mixed Martial Arts. Now I admit to not knowing an awful lot about MMA just that, having given it a go, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not for me. I don’t have anything against its brutality or its violence and I have no other ethical or moral qualms with it. My problem with MMA is that it keeps infringing on publications, programmes, websites and other media outlets that were originally professional wrestling in theme. Read the rest of this entry »

THWD: UK - The WWE’s nice little earner
by Tink Holloway on 18 April 2008

Ever since I was very young and watched my first WWE (F as it was at the time) pay-per-view, Royal Rumble 1994, I had always wanted to see it live. The way Vince McMahon would assure everybody that the arena had gone cold when The Undertaker came out and the fan reaction to Bret Hart’s entrance into the Royal Rumble were unforgettable, I couldn’t possibly imagine what it would be like to be at such a show. As I grew up I grew ever more cynical but that initial desire to see the WWE in the flesh always stuck with me. Read the rest of this entry »

KR: The Road to WrestleMania
by Robert Heard on 29 March 2008

Right, well it is well known that I am a Puro writer and have never written on the subject of American Wrestling. But a Puro blog on the eve of WrestleMania seems wrong, not in the least because WrestleMania is not a Japanese event at all…HustleMania is but then the less said about that the better. KR: The BIG Statement with a BIG Show
by Robert Heard on 29 March 2008

So WrestleMania, the biggest event on the calendar for wrestling fans will be a huge event. It will be the second ever to be held completely outdoors. It is reported it will pump twenty five million into the local economy and bring 60,000 people to Orlando as well. Read the rest of this entry »

TSC: WrestleMania VIII
by The Beltster on 4 February 2008

The Road to WrestleMania has begun with a bang, the ’severely injured’ John Cena returned to WWE at the Royal Rummmmmmble with the No. 30 slot and fought for 3 hard minutes to secure his place in the main event of…No Way Out? Hmmm…anyways, somebody has to get the title off Orton before WrestleMania, I mean WWE wants to draw a few buys, right? Surely. Read the rest of this entry »

TSC: WWF Royal Rumble 1988
by The Beltster on 22 January 2008

The Royal Rumble is a week away, one of the only PPV’s each year that I consider ‘must see’, having kept the original concept throughout the years (unlike the Survivor Series, which used to be ‘must see’ and is now ’sh*t’). Read the rest of this entry »

TSC: No Holds Barred
by The Beltster on 6 January 2008

Being that its the Christmas/New Year period, I was considering penning a wonder, descriptive piece on Xanta Klaws (or whatever the hell he was called), Balls Mahoney’s favourite festive seasonal individual.

Instead, I decided not to. So, on with the show…as it were. Read the rest of this entry »

ST: Do not talk to me about fake
by Saz on 6 January 2008

There’s a saying in wrestling.

The person who says that wrestling is fake knows nothing about wrestling at all.

Say fake to people like Chris Benoit whose “fake” concussions turned him insane, say fake to Sid whose leg broke in half after the merest of falls, say fake to every single wrestler who has been through agony just to entertain people. Read the rest of this entry »
