CBlog IX- Chris Benoit
by Cassidy Haslett on 26 June 2007

As I am writing this I am still stunned about the whole Benoit story. For those reading this who haven’t heard or don’t know the details currently available: Chris Benoit, Nancy Benoit, & Daniel Benoit were all found dead on June 25, 2007 of an apparent double murder-suicide.

It still perplexes me, but it’s been reported that the Fayette County, GA police have come to the conclusion that Chris Benoit murdered his wife, Nancy, and their 7-year-old son, Daniel in their Fayetteville home (just outside of Atlanta). I am not doing this out of laziness, but I think what I posted on Talk Wrestling Online would be the same thing I would post here, so here is what I had to say on the forum:

To me it doesn’t matter, but this Benoit story is getting some major attention. This morning I was listening to my favourite radio station, 99.7 Kiss FM out of Springfield, IL and they reported the Benoit story and noted it was a double murder-suicide and stated that Chris murdered his son and wife. They went on to beg the question that I have wanted to know: How can someone kill their 7-year-old son (actually they asked how could someone shoot their 7-year-old son, but he wasn’t shot)? Chris was one of my favourite wrestling superstars and to think of him as a murderer is just unbearable to me. The radio station also brought up that wrestling deaths are hardly ever under normal circumstances. I was a big fan of Benoit and I still enjoy his matches, but how could he do such a thing? It doesn’t seem to add up if you think about it. I mean, Benoit was home on Saturday and told WWE he was attending to a family emergency, but was he home with the intentions of killing his family and himself, had he already killed Nancy? There has to be something more to this. Maybe Nancy wanted a divorce? I don’t know. This is truly shocking to me and I can’t seem to get over it. While Monday’s tribute was good for the Benoit Legacy, I think ECW and SmackDown! should have the tribute matches for Chris. There are some great matches in my mind that would be great and would do justice to the legacy of Chris Benoit.

————————————–

I think one of those matches that would be a great tribute to Chris would be Edge Vs. Chavo Guerrero. Edge and Chavo were among the most emotional and hardest hit of the Benoit tragedy at last night’s RAW. CM Punk Vs. William Regal would also prove to be a good tribute match.

That’s all I got for this edition of the CBlog.

    Steroids are pure evil..

It always ends up in tragedy..

In sports or life Steroids are a banned substance for a reason..

    Such a shame..

  • Forget baseball the Senate needs to look into WWE right away, this is no Pillman or Guerrero, Benoit took the lives of two innocent people, roid-rage is real and the policy in palce in WWE is useless, Vince pushed the “sports entertainment” angle to get out from underneath the state athletic commissionsnd steroid use is running rampant, this is a publicly traded company it is now time to act without delay.

  • Princess140204 says:

I do not under no circumstances believe that chris benoit killed his wife, son or himself. wrestling was his life why would he give it up so easily when he was doing so well? He was so devoted to his kids why kill them?

  • But,
What is wrestling without steriods, it really wouldn’t look the same, and for sure alot of wrestling fans would not be content with watching average men wrestle, obviously this is a tradegy, but i couldn’t make my self belive that steriods are to blame, maybe partially but never fully.

  • I just wanted to say I think he was crazy to kill his family he had a sick mind to do that to his family I will never be able to understand why he did it.

  • Why do all the wrestlers do steroids considering all the side effects?

  • As a couple when you bring a child into the world why would you kill your own child when you adore him as a real parent you would protect any child. I’m a 36 year old father, I would go through hell and back to protect them in any way WWE is being run by an assclown and he is running it to the ground and is the BIGGEST FATTEST FAKER in the world and stay off the ‘roids VINCE. TNA IS BETTER.

  • Jessica Dayoc says:

I am an avid fan of Chris Benoit. My husband, my daughter and I really admired him because of his style and simply cannot believe what he did. He was like a normal person. Please extent my condolences.

  • Don’t have to say anything more…

  • JIm Mercado says:

Some of wrestlings greatest – these deaths are a clue that something may be wrong in the world of professional wrestling.

  • OI, MIKE!

About your list….you’re wrong on three of them. Joey Marella and Owen Hart didn’t die because of steroids. Joey was in a vehicle accident, and with Owen, it was an accident due to WWE being more interested in entertainment than wrestling. Gorilla Monsoon was partly due to never really recovering from losing his son, and how ill he was.

Next time, get your facts straight.

  • He didn’t say they died of steroids anywhere in his post. He said the following people have died. No mention of steroids, drugs, or any reasoning at all.

Next time, get YOUR facts straight.

  • It’s frightening to think that the persuit of money and the desire to entertain would cause people to actually endanger their health and their very lives. It”s tragic that these things just keep happening and many wrestlers STILL don’t seem to have a clue as to how dangerous excessive drug use can be (or just don’t care). I mean, when are they going to wake up? When there’s nobody left?
