UK Scene #112

In a week where the UK Scene has been overshadowed by unfortunate events stateside I will do my best to bring the wrestling back to people’s attention. This week I will discuss all the news regarding the FWA’s big return in 2004, more developments in the run up to NCW’s debut and the Colin McKay retirement situation I talked about last week. All this and more who needs NBC news?

In a week where the UK Scene has been overshadowed by unfortunate events stateside I will do my best to bring the wrestling back to people’s attention. This week I will discuss all the news regarding the FWA’s big return in 2004, more developments in the run up to NCW’s debut and the Colin McKay retirement situation I talked about last week. All this and more who needs NBC news?

So let’s start with the big news update by the FWA. The die hard FWA fans now only have three weeks to wait until their long awaited return to in ring action and as that date gets closer, more and more news is getting released to please the FWA fans who have had to wait since 2003 for in ring action. With this in mind the pressure is on the FWA to deliver and to show they have made good use of their break from the UK Scene so “New Frontiers 2” has the potential to be the most defining night in FWA history.

We are still waiting on a full card for the event but the matches announced so far have already stirred up a lot of talk amongst wrestling fans. The main event will pit Raven against CM Punk which means both the US stars they have announced for the event will not get the chance to test out the UK talent. This match has caused a lot of controversy due to the fans wanting some of the UK stars in the main event but I have no doubt that it will be a brilliant match and is only following on from all US matches FWA have held in the past like when CM Punk last came to England to face Colt Cobana.

A big all UK match that I am really looking forward to though is Zebra Kid vs. Hade Vanson in a ladder match for the All England title. I think I am looking forward to this match more than the main event and I think will be a hot contender for match of the night honours. Zebra Kid has accepted the invitation we are now just waiting for Hade to follow suit. These are the only two confirmed matches so far on the card but rumours are flying around that two stars from NOAH could be at the event. Stars that won’t be at the event are Ulf Herman and Flash Barker who are still recovering from injury and to add to this Brandon Thomas is officially missing from the FWA as he hasn’t been seen in some time.

Now moving on to another big promotion that being All Star Wrestling. At their latest event at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon which is a venue synonymous with All Star and ever since I can remember they have putting on regular shows at the halls they made a big announcement. That after decades promoting shows at the venue that they are going to cease running shows at Fairfield halls until October and then will only run 5 a year probably between October and February.

This is the latest venue change or cancellation for All Star as this is hot on the heels of All Star no longer being able to put on shows at the Colston Halls in Bristol another long term venue for All Star. All Star are seen as the most traditional wrestling promotions in the country and part of their history and tradition are the venues that have hosted All Star events and with the changes and cancellations of venues I think they are losing the tradition and history that they have become famous for.

We are now one week away from the debut of NCW. On the 13th of March from the Riverside Leisure Centre in Reading NCW will try to make good on all the hype and use the event as a stepping-stone to greater things. With it being only week away some matches have been announced that you can look forward to next weekend. Here is how the card looks so far:

  • Robbie Brookside will face Shane Douglas for the NCW Heavyweight Title

  • UK Pitbulls v Hardcore Keith Myatt & Iron Mike Weaver

  • Charlie Rage v Baxter Burridge

Now last week you will remember as I was writing the column news was coming through that Colin McKay had lost a retirement match against Justin Richards at BCW “Night of the fan.” This week Colin McKay released a statement about what happened that night. He states that he will live by the terms of the match and that he is now retired from active duty at BCW but has told Drew McDonald to watch his back as not only will he make him retire but he will cripple him along the way. McKay now says he will focus all his energies on the running of BCW.

It seems that our Brits abroad are having a blast in Atlanta. During the week Ashe and Karl Fury emailed home to say that they are having a brilliant time. They attended the live Raw on Monday and since have been trained by Williams Regal, American Dragon and even the great Chris Benoit stopped by for a day to work a sixty minute match with them. So their trip to the states is better than even they could have ever imagined.

It has been a busy week for shows in the UK this week with shows put on by FCW, UCW, All Star and UWL. So there has been something for everybody this week in various parts of the country. The fast paced action shows no sign of stopping in March as the All Star tour continues, FWA returns bigger than ever and plus the debut of NCW so get out there and support the UK Scene.

This week I would like to finish with some news that hasn’t been widely reported and that is of course news on EWW. As we are now less than two months away from the big comeback event more and more matches are being announced and the card is starting to look quite impressive. These are some of the big matches with have been added to the card:

  • Francisco Capone vs. Jonny Storm

  • Stevie Knight vs. Phil Powers

  • Spud vs. Cyclone

Until next time,
