Welcome one and all to the first UK Scene column of 2005. After another highly successful year in 2004 it’s up to me to make 2005 even better. I will start this year by talking about what there is to look forward to in 2005 in the terms of live events and ground breaking news in the UK Scene. So here goes nothing as we delve feet first in to the new year.
My two promotions to watch in 2005 are FCW and RBW as they plan to build on their successes in 2004. These two promotions have established themselves in the UK Scene and have turned heads doing it, so hopefully they can go on to even better things this year. FCW sent shocks around the UK as in the age of big supershows they managed to put on an event which featured Chris Hero, Colt Cobana and D’Lo Brown with an admission fee of under £10. We are currently in a period where it seems people are only interested in making profit out of the UK Scene so this event really put my faith back in the UK Scene.
After the departure of TWA and less shows put on by All Star, RBW have come through as the new credible competition to the All Star style of family orientated, old school style show. Now considering the budget All Star has that is quite an achievement and it has been done in such a short space of time. RBW have got a strong base and now as they continue to roll out more training facilities around the country the future is looking bright.
After a years of dreaming FWA finally accomplished their dream in 2004 of promoting an event at the Coventry Skydome so what do they have planned for 2005? If TWC can stay afloat I think the FWA will continue to blossom through their partnership. Hopefully in 2005 the FWA can finally get a whole list of regular venues which will see them touring the country on a more regular basis so they can get their product out to the masses.
It looks like 2005 will be the year of the supershow as promotions up and down the country try to cash in on increasing number of touring US stars there will be in the country due to big TWC and FWA events. You may get lucky and see some big names in your local town hall so be sure to check out what wrestling events are happening in your area.
No doubt we will see a whole new host of UK promotions come and go over the year to in keep with the recent traditions. Whether it be bad or good I don’t think it is something we will ever be able to shake but as long as it produces more quality live wrestling events I’m happy.
If WAW have got anything to do with it 2005 could be the year of the women in the UK Scene as Sweet Saraya aims to bring some credibility to female wrestling in the UK. As part of WAW the women will have their own division WAWW and it is hoped that in the upcoming months they will be behind putting a national rankings system for female wrestlers in place.
What will happen to the UK Scene as a whole in 2005 I hear you ask. Well we need to keep chipping away at the local and national press getting stories about the UK Scene mentioned any old how we can because as more money gets filtered in to the UK Scene we need more coverage. I hope that come the end of the year that live attendances at UK shows will be up as we need to recoup that money invested. The simple equation that keeps me optimistic that say each years there is a minimum of 250 live shows if we could just encourage ten more fans along to each of those shows we could generate a lot of extra revenue. 250 shows multiplied by ten extra fans works out to 2500 and say each punter was paying £10 per ticket that would make £250,000 for the UK Scene. That’s even more than what Championship football side Plymouth Argyle paid for their new striker this week.
I know it’s only short and brief this week but I thought I would ease you back in to the routine slowly as you try and ware off the indulgences of the past few weeks.
