TITLE MATCH FOR BOURNEMOUTH ANNOUNCED….IT’S……
It’s the announcement WAW fans have been waiting for. After weeks of speculation, Commissioner Steven Howard-Platt has finally announced who will face “The Dark Angel” Ashe for the British Heavyweight title at May Mayhem III in Bournemouth on May 28th – none other than current FWA British Heavyweight Champion “The Showstealer” Alex Shane.
The choice of Shane as Ashe’s next opponent has caused some controversy, and WAW owner “Rowdy” Ricky Knight is not happy with the situation.
I had the chance to speak with Commissioner Howard-Platt about how the WAW Championship Committee came to this decision; “I called a meeting of the committee for Saturday, March 12th, letting the various committee members, including Ricky Knight, know of the meeting some two weeks beforehand. However, Ricky apparently forgot about the meeting, and took a booking with HEW for the same night.
“I didn’t know about this until about thirty minutes before the meeting was due to start, when Ricky’s son Roy (the Zebra Kid), telephoned me. Because of this, I asked Roy to take his father’s place at the meeting at short notice.
“When we got around to discussing the challengers for Ashe’s mandatory title defence at May Mayhem III, we discussed many possible contenders, and it was Roy who suggested Alex Shane for the title shot, citing two reasons, that he already holds two versions of the British Heavyweight title, and because he is probably Britain’s most high profile wrestler at the moment, adding Alex to the show in such an important match against Ashe for the championship would be good for business. The committee agreed with him, so we made the match.
“However, because Alex was sorting out his business dealings with the FWA, I couldn’t actually begin negotiations with him until about ten days ago, which is the main reason I delayed announcing this bout until yesterday (Sunday).”
When I approached Ricky Knight for his view on this decision, he was unavailable for comment, his representative citing the mild concussion he was suffering from after his street fight with the Zebra Kid at the FWA’s Crunch show as the reason he didn’t want to make any comment.
However, Knight was quite vocal earlier in the week, criticising Commissioner Howard-Platt on the WAW Fan Forum for his handling of in-ring affairs. Knight also telephoned the Commissioner, and demanding a spot on Team WAW alongside the Zebra Kid as they take on Team FWA on the same show. Howard-Platt reluctantly agreed to Knight’s request.
While staying on the subject of the first British Inter-Federation Cup contest, Team FWA manager Greg “The Truth” Lambert announced the first member of his team, none other than former FWA British Heavyweight and ROH Pure Wrestling Champion “The Anarchist” Doug Williams. The inclusion of Williams means that they will have the man regarded as the best technical wrestler in Britain among their number.
Tickets for the show, priced at £10 for adults, £7 for children, and £25 for a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children), can be reserved by telephoning 01603 474693, or by e-mailing officewaw@aol.com.
IN OTHER WAW NEWS…..
Since the announcement that Sweet Saraya will be defending her Women’s Rumble title in the Superbrawl match at WAW’s next show at The Talk in Norwich, her tag-team partner “Naughty” Nikki Best has entered into the bout, saying that she thinks she can win the bout. Not many people would be backing against the tough veteran.
And while we’re on the subject of WAW’s next show in Norwich in July, don’t forget you can still enter our competition to name the show.
Entering the competition is simple. E-mail officewaw@aol.com, with WAW JULY SHOW COMPETITION in the subject box, with your name and address, and with your answer.
The prize for this competition is a family ticket for the show you have named.
All entries must be in by Tuesday, May 31st.
PS – No entries saying Summerslam please. I believe that name has already been taken!
That’s about it for this week. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the WAW website, news and fan forum sections at WAWrestling.co.uk for all the latest news. We’ll be back next week.
