The 552nd edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown came to you from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. Match Results

  • Money-in-the-Bank Preview: Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler def. MVP & Matt Hardy by Dolph Ziggler pinning MVP following the Zig Zag.
  • Beth Phoenix & Tiffany def. Michelle McCool & Layla by Beth Phoenix pinning Michelle McCool with the Glam Slam.
  • R-Truth & John Morrison def. The Hart Dynasty by R-Truth pinning Tyson Kidd following the Lie Detector.
  • Luke Gallows (with CM Punk & Serena) def. Rey Mysterio by pin after Serena knocks Rey Mysterio off of the top rope.

The stipulation placed on this match was, if Rey Mysterio defeated Luke Gallows, then Rey would face CM Punk in a Street Fight at WrestleMania, but if Gallows won, then Rey & Punk will face off in a regular match where, if Rey loses that match, then Rey will be forced to join The Straightedge Society. The end of the match came about when CM Punk distracts the referee while Serena knocks Mysterio off of the top rope; which allowed Gallows to pick up the win.

  • Non-Title: The Undertaker def. Drew McIntyre by pin following the Tombstone Piledriver.

Detailed Results

One week after CM Punk and The Straightedge Society interrupted his family’s gathering in the ring for his daughter’s birthday and slapped him in the face in front of his family, Rey Mysterio opens the show to address CM Punk’s words and actions. Rey reveals that he has not had a “moment of peace” in the last week and every time he closes his eyes, he sees his daughter cry and feels the “weight of the world” being placed on his shoulders; all thanks to CM Punk. Rey continues that, in his career, he has been “embarrassed and afraid”, but CM Punk “crossed a line” last week by confronting him and his family. Rey states that it goes “beyond” the “sea of lies” that is CM Punk’s straightedge living. Rey then announces that he accepts the WrestleMania challenge of CM Punk, but that Punk does “not deserve” a standard match! Rey then drops the bombshell that he wants their match to be a Street Fight! Rey explains that Punk “needs to learn a lesson”; the lesson that you “don’t mess with another man’s family” before vowing to “teach” Punk that lesson! This prompts CM Punk & The Straightedge Society to appear, as CM Punk says he “understands” how Rey feels before saying that Rey showed the fans and Rey’s family that he is a “coward”! Punk states that he knows Rey is filled with “rage” and says that is “no way” to handle his “problems”! Rey responds by saying that, to understand how he feels, Punk would have to be “human”, which he is not! Rey then calls Punk a “monster” before threatening to walk up the ramp and give Punk a “beating”! The apprehensive Punk decrees that, if Rey lays a “finger” on him before WrestleMania, then he will call the match off and Rey will not get “anything”! Punk then tells Rey to “see the straightedge inside him” and that he does not have to close his eyes to see the tears of Rey’s daughter, because he has “pictures”! Punk then continues to chip away at Rey’s psyche by going through the pictures, one-by-one, with his own, sadistic narration! Punk then says that, last week, Rey was supposed to be the “superhero” that made the “monster” go away, but that is not what happened! Punk then reveals that he realized last week that he can “save” Rey Mysterio and make Rey the father that Rey “wants and needs to be”! Rey says that him and Punk are “nothing alike” and Punk responds by saying that, by being straightedge, he is “better” than Rey! Punk then pleads with Rey to join The Straightedge Society, which Rey responds to by saying that Punk is “out of his mind” and that he will not join him! Rey then states that, if Punk calls off their WrestleMania match, then he will have to fight Rey “every day”! Rey then gives Punk the ultimatum to “just say yes or just say no”! Punk responds by saying he will present a third option, because he “pities” Rey before proposing that Rey go one-on-one with Luke Gallows and, if Rey beats Gallows, then Rey gets his Street Fight against him at WrestleMania, but if Rey loses, then their match at WrestleMania will be a regular match and, if Rey loses the WrestleMania match, then Rey must join The Straightedge Society and accept Punk as his “savior” at WrestleMania! Punk then proposes that, by doing so, Rey can “forget” about the image of Punk making his daughter cry, which Rey responds to by saying he will never “forget” that image and vows to beat Gallows and give Punk a “beating he will never forget” at WrestleMania before telling Punk “may god have mercy on your soul”! Can Rey Mysterio defeat Luke Gallows to get his Street Fight against CM Punk at WrestleMania or will “The Straightedge Disciple” defeat Rey and make the WrestleMania match a standard contest where a loss by Rey would force Rey to join The Straightedge Society at the biggest show on the WWE calendar, WrestleMania?

The opening match of the night was a special tag team match featuring four of the nine competitors in the Money-in-the-Bank Ladder Match as former WWE Tag Team Champions would reunite as MVP would team with Matt Hardy to take on “The All-American American” Jack Swagger & “The Platinum Superstar” Dolph Ziggler! In the end, it was an opportunistic Dolph Ziggler hitting the Zig Zag on MVP en route to picking up the win for himself and Jack Swagger! After the match, Dolph pulled a giant ladder out from under the ring and, in what could be a representation of WrestleMania, Dolph climbed the ladder and unhooked the Money-in-the-Bank briefcase! Will this be the scene come WrestleMania or will one of the other eight competitors win the Money-in-the-Bank title opportunity?

Backstage, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long has a discussion with Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre and reviews McIntyre’s two losses that were “expunged” from the record by WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon and, last week, McIntyre finally qualified for the Money-in-the-Bank Ladder Match on his third attempt. The GM then says that, since August, McIntyre has been “undefeated”, but that will change on SmackDown! Long then announces that Drew McIntyre will go one-on-one with The Undertaker!

After Beth Phoenix came to the aid of Tiffany last week in an effort to prevent an assault by Michelle McCool & Layla that ended up having Phoenix lay SmackDown Consultant Vickie Guerrero out with a clothesline, the team of Beth Phoenix & Tiffany would face Women’s Champion Michelle McCool & Layla in tag team action. In the end, it was the dominant Beth Phoenix planting Michelle McCool with the Glam Slam en route to pinning the Women’s Champion! Immediately following the match, SmackDown Consultant Vickie Guerrero comes out and tells Beth Phoenix that she owes her an “apology”! Phoenix reveals that she apologized to Vickie in her office last week, but Vickie said that she wants the apology to be a public one! Phoenix admits that it was “wrong” for her to put her hands on an “authority figure” before apologizing for her actions last week! Vickie responds by saying that Phoenix’s apology is still “unaccepted”! Vickie then vows that Phoenix will “always regret” putting her hands on Vickie! Vickie continues that she is Phoenix’s “superior” in “more ways than Phoenix can think of” and vows to “prove it” next week when Phoenix will go one-on-one with the SmackDown Consultant! Does the untrained Vickie Guerrero truly believe that she can defeat the two-time Women’s Champion Beth Phoenix?

After getting blasted with the World Heavyweight Title belt last week during The Highlight Reel, the #1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania, Edge, would host his show, The Cutting Edge, with the guest being none other than the World Heavyweight Champion Christ Jericho! Edge comes out and states that, last week, Jericho had him on The Highlight Reel and, this week, he decided to “return the favor” to Jericho before Edge introduces his guest, the World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho! With his NXT Rookie, Wade Barrett, by his side, World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho comes out and enters The Cutting Edge! Edge responds to the unwelcome Barrett by saying that Jericho & Barrett look like they are set to go to the “prom”! Edge states that he always “looks a few moves ahead” and that he will get the last move at WrestleMania and that Jericho knows what that move will be! Jericho responds by saying that Edge has made an “ultimate mistake” in “boiling down” their WrestleMania match to one move; the Spear! Jericho then asks is Edge can “live up the hype” and says that Edge may not be completely healthy come WrestleMania! Jericho then says that the admiration of the fans means “nothing” if Edge is physically unable to compete! Jericho then boldly threatens to reinjure the Achilles tendon and end the career of Edge! Edge responds by daring Jericho to go for his “checkmate”, but when Jericho does not make his move, Edge attacks the World Heavyweight Champion! Edge turns his attention to Wade Barrett and Edge briefly succumbs to the double-teaming tactics of Jericho & Barrett before firing back and tossing Jericho out of the ring! Edge then turns his focus back to Barrett as “The Rated-R Superstar” blasts Barrett with the Spear! The distraction of Wade Barrett allows Jericho to re-enter the ring and hit Edge with the Codebreaker! After laying Edge out, Jericho stomps on the Achilles tendon of Edge before standing tall holding the World Heavyweight Title up high! Will Chris Jericho achieve the same result when it counts in nine nights at WrestleMania or will Edge hit the Spear on Jericho and win the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania?

Nine nights before they challenge The Miz & Big Show for the Unified WWE Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania, Los Angeles’ own John Morrison & R-Truth would face The Hart Dynasty in tag team action! In the end, it was R-Truth hitting the Lie Detector on Tyson Kidd en route to picking up the momentum-building win for himself and John Morrison! Can R-Truth & John Morrison achieve the ultimate tag team success by dethroning The Miz & Big Show and winning the Unified WWE Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania?

Then it was time for Rey Mysterio to go one-on-one with “The Straightedge Disciple” Luke Gallows in a match with WrestleMania implications as, if Rey beats Gallows, then Rey will get a Street Fight against CM Punk at WrestleMania, but if Gallows wins, then the WrestleMania match will be a standard contest where, if Rey loses that match, then Rey must join The Straightedge Society! In the end, it was CM Punk distracting the referee while Serena knocked Rey Mysterio off of the top rope that led to Gallows getting the win and ensuring a regular match between CM Punk & Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania where, if Rey loses, he will be forced to join The Straightedge Society! After the match, Rey took his frustrations out on Luke Gallows as, in a fit of emotional rage, Rey absolutely whaled away at “The Straightedge Disciple”! Will CM Punk suffer the same fate at WrestleMania or will CM Punk use Rey’s emotion against him at WrestleMania?

Then it was time for the main event as, nine nights before he puts his undefeated WrestleMania streak against the legendary career of Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania, The Undertaker would go one-on-one with the Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre! As he continues to build momentum to WrestleMania, The Undertaker picked up the dominant win over Drew McIntyre! The bigger story came after the match’s conclusion as, once The Undertaker reached the stage, Shawn Michaels appeared and was ready to deliver Sweet Chin Music to “The Deadman”, but Undertaker countered and was set to deliver the Tombstone to HBK, but Michaels slipped out and was able to level “The Phenom” with Sweet Chin Music! Both men are more determined than ever to win at WrestleMania, but who will come out on top? Will Shawn Michaels be the one to finally end the undefeated WrestleMania streak of The Undertaker or will The Undertaker retain the streak and end the storied career of the one and only Shawn Michaels?
