UK Scene #115

Welcome one and all once again to another weekly round up of news views and opinions on the week’s events in the UK Scene as I see them because yes that’s right I call them as I see them. This column is brought to you on the weekend that FWA make their big return to action after a break since the end of 2003. Also this week we will be talking about the re-emergence of Jake “The Snake” Roberts on the UK Scene and news on what will be in my opinion WZW’s most important event to date as they bring over D’Lo Brown the biggest star ever to appear on a WZW show…

Welcome one and all once again to another weekly round up of news views and opinions on the week’s events in the UK Scene as I see them because yes that’s right I call them as I see them. This column is brought to you on the weekend that FWA make their big return to action after a break since the end of 2003. Also this week we will be talking about the re-emergence of Jake “The Snake” Roberts on the UK Scene and news on what will be in my opinion WZW’s most important event to date as they bring over D’Lo Brown the biggest star ever to appear on a WZW show.

As I write this column FWA “New Frontiers” is taking place in Brent Town Hall. I have received many text messages from people at the event and if what they are saying is true it has been an earth shattering night of action as far as the FWA are concerned and they have really come back with a bang. They have kept quiet for a while now and not hyped New Frontiers as much as previous events and I think that approach has worked as they know they have nothing to prove to the fans and that if they put on a card worth watching people will come regardless of the hype because they believe in the FWA product. This was how the card looked going in to the event:

  • James Tighe v. Mark ‘5 Star’ Belton (If Belton wins, he will earn a shot at the FWA Heavyweight title in the near future).

  • Jonny Storm v. X-Dream (XPW European championship match)

  • Raven v. CM Punk (International Guest Match)

  • Alex Shane v. Jack Xavier

  • Hade Vansen v. Zebra Kid (All-England championship match)

  • Mark Sloan vs. Aviv Mayaan

Tonight’s event is not all though as this is part of a long weekend back in action for the FWA as they take the tour to Enfield and Newport. This weekend will be the catalyst for things to come as I believe in April we will see the start of the FWA “Unsigned” series of events as well as lots of events from venues where the FWA have a strong following including the return to the Morecambe Dome.

Not only are there three wrestling events going on this weekend but Raven who starred tonight at New Frontiers will be appearing at the Extreme Central UK shop in Manchester on Sunday (28/03). He will be there from 1 – 3pm signing autographs, answering questions, selling merchandise and Polaroid’s. Due to the cost of bringing him to the shop the entrance fee is £5 but well worth it in my opinion if you can get down there.

WZW made its biggest announcement to date this week by announcing they had signed former WWF Intercontinental champion D’Lo Brown. After he was announced to be appearing for X-Wrestling everyone was hyped that someone had brought him over for the first time since his WWF days but now he is being brought to the masses as shortly after FWA announced they would be using him for Crunch and now WZW have grabbed themselves a piece of the action by striking while the iron is hot and securing his services.

This should get WZW a lot of attention to its up and coming roster and promotion. He will headline their event on April 10th at Whitley Bay tagging with WZW star Domino to take on General Trent Steel and a partner of his choosing. Tickets for this event are very cheaply priced at just £10 a seat for the most expensive ticket in the house. This news has come in line with the release this week of a new WZW DVD release from the Breakout Tour they recently staged. For more info on WZW see: wzwuk.com

Now to move on to a related subject that of course being Jake “The Snake” Roberts who featured on the WZW breakout tour. As you may be aware he got himself some attention again after going quiet for a while in the UK Scene, working regular events in the UK for sometime. During one of the events on the tour Jake did a shoot on well known UK Scene personality and FWA managing director Alex Shane which got a lot of people talking.

Since this happening, he is back working again, his next confirmed booking is with WAW on May 21st in Hunstanton. Now you may remember when Jake first came to England WAW used him for some shows and then after certain incidents occurred they showed him the door. Well this has either been a turn around from WAW or Jake has made up for the past and has managed to secure himself some more work with this prestigious organisation. You never know this may be the full time return to the UK rings by Jake I just want to know what he has been getting up to since we last saw him working regularly in the UK.

This weekend is a very important weekend for one of my favourite developing promotions Future Championship Wrestling as thy present “Road to the Gold Part 2” with one of the most intriguing main events I have seen from a UK promotion in a long time that being Majik vs. Spud . The event takes place from the Baggeridge Social Welfare Centre, Lower Gornal on Sunday the 28th of March. The rest of the card currently looks like this:

  • FCW Championship Semi Final: Kevin O’Neil vs. Laken Xander

  • FCW Championship Semi Final: Celt Kennedy vs. Morales

  • Sam Green vs. A-Star Athlete (If Sam loses, he leaves for a year. If A-Star loses, 4Play split)

Doors are at 7pm so be sure to get down there early and for more information be sure to log on to: futurewrestling.co.uk. Also whilst checking out the site be sure to join in the survey they are conducting at the moment to see what you yes you the fan wants to see.

Thanks for reading and have a safe week.

Until next time,

Adam Sibley
