Death Warrior DVD Review

After the surprisingly fantastic Blood & Bone (seriously, go see it, the film is awesome) and the crushing disappointment that was Unrivaled, it’s now time for me to review a third MMA-inspired movie for W101. The big question is in which side of the fence will Death Warrior fall?

Unrivaled DVD Review

This is the second MMA-inspired movie I’ve reviewed for Wrestling 101 in recent months and, unfortunately, the difference between the two is night and day. Blood & Bone was a phenomenal example of the genre and a showed us how to perfectly utilise real-life MMA fighters in a movie setting…

UFC 103: Franklin vs Belfort DVD Review

Another UFC in a new territory, this time the group’s debut in Dallas, was a good show that featured some memorable finishes, bad nights for two stars and the emergence of fresh contenders at both Light-heavyweight and Heavyweight. The full stop of the night was punctuated by Vitor Belfort, who triumphantly returned to the Octagon after years of inconsistency…

UFC 102: Couture vs Nogueira DVD Review

Emanating from the Rose Garden in Portland Oregon UFC 102 was another successful debut in a new market and another largely entertaining show capped off by a main event that claimed the top spot on some people’s fight of the year cards. Perhaps most importantly what the show proved was that Randy Couture and main event opponent Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira are still relevant, still entertaining and still capable of competing at a high level…

UFC 101: Declaration DVD Review

There was realistically no way that this show could top the spectacle that was UFC 100, however the 08/08/2009 show from a packed Wachovia Center did exceed some expectations and proved to be a memorable debut for the group in Philadelphia. Most importantly coming out of the show it was firmly established that Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn are legitimate PPV draws as well as undeniable killers in their respective divisions…

UFC: The Ultimate Fighter – Season 9 – United States vs United Kingdom DVD Review

The country vs. country concept provided a shot in the arm for The Ultimate Fighter in many respects. The inherent rivalry in presenting the show in such a way added an increased sense of importance over which team would come out on top. This was greatly assisted by the underlying conflict that would develop between the coaches which at times played off a classic pro-wrestling style dynamic with the cocky heel, Michael Bisping and the All American good guy, Dan Henderson…

UFC 100: Making History DVD Review

The tagline was ‘making history’ and that is exactly what UFC 100 did. The June 11th 2009 show drew a rabid 10,871 to the Mandalay Bay events centre and has gone down in the record books as the most successful UFC event in the promotions history. The show itself was littered with highlights and memorable scenes, such as the absolute dominance of George St. Pierre, the stunning knockout of Michael Bisping and the downright terrifying mauling Frank Mir received at the hands of former WWE champ Brock Lesnar…

Blood and Bone DVD Review

The movie opens with pre-credits scene showing a gang of prisoners, led by the genuinely scary Kimbo Slice (with genuinely scary bushy beard), heading to the prison shower room to take out our hero (after paying off an unseen guard). Now, unless you haven’t seen a movie before in your life, you don’t need me to tell you that the eight-strong team of hardened cons aren’t successful, otherwise we’d have a short movie on our hands…

UFC 99: The Comeback DVD Review

The promotions first foray into mainland Europe in June 2009 featured a stacked card that on paper promised much and for the most part delivered. The show drew an enthusiastic 12,854 to the Lanxess arena and had created somewhat of a local buzz mostly on the back of the last minute addition to the card of Mirko Cro Cop…

UFC: Brock Lesnar Will Fight Again!

Current UFC Heavyweight champion and former WWE star Brock Lesnar will fight again according to his coach Marty Morgan. While Brock has wished to keep details of his medical condition under wraps it has been widely speculated that his suspected diverticulitis could, if major surgery were needed, keep him out of action for at least […]
