FWA British Uprising III Special
Welcome one and all to another exciting but belated edition of the UK Scene. This week I will be reviewing the huge British Uprising III show. If you were there live at the event or maybe online waiting for the results I hope this review will be an interesting read and insight from my perspective. On a night that was set to be the most important in FWA history, did they deliver on the hype?
We must first start with everyone’s usual bone of contention the attendance. Personally I hate fans that seem more interested in the attendance than the event as at the end of the day you have brought a ticket to see an event, not do a head count, if less people than were expected come you get a better seat and the only people it effects are the people putting on the event so why should you be so concerned?
As you guys are so interested in the crowd numbers there were around 2000 people whether you want to believe it or not that’s up to you but it is the truth and I know it for a fact as I actually bother to research my information and not just make it up to either put down or praise the FWA. Now yes 2000 is not a sell out but the facts have some how been forgotten with other peoples agendas. The facts being that in an area where they have never promoted before managed to draw the biggest crowd in their history. After years of promoting in London and in particular Bethnal Green they were drawing sell outs but only in venues with a capacity around the 1000 mark so all I can say is what an achievement. Now I for one applaud their success and am sure that if they promote again there in the near future that they will even go better than that.
In the event itself after four years away from the FWA heavyweight title Alex Shane finally exercised his demons beating Doug Williams in the main event and ending Doug’s 18 month reign as champion. Danny Williams did not sell out to Alex Shane but Ulf Herman cost Doug the match when he tried to help but ended up hitting Doug by mistake. As well as winning the title he escaped the wrestle vs. boxer match that he was dreading against Danny Williams.
Now I know there are a lot of Alex Shane haters around but I for one am glad the belt is back on him. I enjoyed his first run for the belt and think it is going to be really good for the company. After spending over a year as part of the fan favourite tag team with Ulf Herman he was putting over other guys left right and centre always being the one who was pinned. Alex did this gladly with no second thought as he helped get guys like “The Family” over as he put the company before himself. After his run with Ulf Alex again did the sensible thing he didn’t just jump in the title scene he spent a year once again building himself back up to a monster heel to make the most anticipated match between him and Doug.
Alex Shane is without a doubt the best stick guy in the FWA which is going to help so much in building the storylines and feuds around the world title. It’s like in WWE if the best wrestler was champion it would be Chris Benoit but it works better and draws bigger numbers with guys like HHH and Randy Orton as champion who are good on the stick so having Alex as champion is going to appeal more to the mainstream or casual fan that the FWA are trying to get to their events.
In other matches we saw Burchill get an excellent response from the crowd as the news was broken before the event that he had signed a development deal with the WWE and in what could be his last Uprising appearance his team of Paul Travell and Terry Funk beat the triad. AJ Style was late getting to the arena but still had enough focus and composure to beat James Tighe and as I predicted Spud won the opening 3 way which again was a highlight of the card. There were a few matches that I wrongly predicted on the card as Hampton Court retained their tag belts and Mark Belton beating D-lo Brown.
The event will always be remembered for the one night only return of Jody Fleisch after over a year away from the FWA. He made his impact on the event as he helped his friend out in the only way he could. On the night Jonny Storm was looking for the backing of his locker room as he needed to win the vote to get himself reinstated in the FWA. He needed the support of at least 51% of the locker room and with all the votes in he still needed one more vote to get back in the FWA so Jody used his appearance at Uprising to get his best friend Jonny reinstated.
Now where does this leave the FWA I hear you ask? Well coming hot off the heels of Uprising they have Gold Rush on November 28th back at their usual stomping ground the Broxbourne Civic Hall. The good news of it being so close to Uprising is that we will be able to see Burchill compete in the FWA for one last time before he jets off to the states. In a non title match for the first time and the last time Alex Shane will go one on one with Burchill in what could be the match of the year.
On the card also we will see the highly anticipated Gold Rush over the top battle royal which will determine who will be the first opponent to Alex Shane’s newly won title. Also on the card Jonny Storm will be going against Chad Collyer and Ulf Herman makes his first competitive appearance back in the FWA teaming up with Doug Williams to go against Joe E.
